CTK JV Wins At The Buzzer; Advances to Tournament Championship 11/26/11 - 07:44 PM
Elvin Ramos hit the game winning 3-pointer Saturday to give the JV a 47-46 victory over Wings Academy
After a successful opening round game in the St. Raymond's Thanksgiving Classic, where Christ the King beat Regis convincingly 58 - 36, the Royals took on a very skilled Wings Academy team in the semi-finals in what would end in dramatic fashion.
At the opening tip, it appeared as though the Royals were in for a long day. They were down 6 - 2 and playing very sloppy before they would turn things around, taking a 12 - 10 lead in the closing minutes of the first quarter. As the half continued, both teams would continually trade baskets, with Wings holding a two point advantage at halftime. The third quarter was more of the same, as both team played a very up-tempo game resulting in numerous lead changes.
With just under 1:30 seconds remaining, and CK down 4, Bryler Paige would receive a pass on the right wing from Brandon Carcamo and hit a step back three that brought the Royals within 1. Wings would follow by attacking the basket and heading to the free throw line for two shots. Although Wings was perfect from the foul line the entire game, the free throw that they missed on that trip would prove to be coslty.
After Wings went one for two from the line and missing a chance to go up by three points, the Royals found themselves down 46 - 44 with just thirteen seconds to play, and leading scorer Abolaji Soyemi (15 points and 10 rebounds) sitting on the bench after fouling out. The Royals would advance the ball down the court, where Brandon Carcomo would again find the open man. In this case, the open man was Elvin Ramos in the right corner, who would proceed to take a 3 pointer that hit nothing but net. That would give the Royals a one point lead with just three seconds to play. Wings last second attempt to win the game was unsuccessful, and the Royal would go on to be victorious by a final score of 47 - 46.
Abolaji Soyemi led the Royals in scoring with 15 points and added 10 rebounds. Bryler Paige had a solid game with 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals. Rounding out the scoring leaders was Brandon Carcomo with 8 points and 6 rebounds.
The Royals will now play for the Championship of the St. Raymond's Thanksgiving Classic on Sunday, November 27th, at 5:15 pm at St. Raymond's High School in the Bronx. Good Luck to the CK Royals.

2010-2011 CTK JV Season Accomplishments 3/6/11 - 07:48 PM
CK celebrates its City Championship victory over Rice.
Team accomplishments:
After nearly five months of hard work and dedication, the Men's JV team at CK has achieved all of their goals.
CK opened the season by winning three consecutive games and the championship of the St. Raymond's Thanksgiving Tournament.
The Royals put together two long winning streaks, a nine game winning streak to open the season, and a fifteen game winning streak to close the season.
CK won both the regular season CHSAA JV "AA" title, and Intersectional City Championship. They beat every opponent that they played at least once.
The sophomores on the team have amassed an overall 47-1 record, consisting of a 23-0 undefeated city championship freshmen season last year and their 24-1 city championship season this year.
Other individual accomplishments:
Head Coach Artie Cox reached his seventh consecutive city championship game on the JV level, winning his overall fifth JV championship at Christ the King.
Isaiah Cosbert was the teams leading scorer averaging 12.96 points per game, including a game high 19 in the city championship. He also led the Royals in three point field goals made (50) and attempted (145).
Team Captain James Coleman was the Royals second leading scorer at 12.76 points per game and finished the season with five double-doubles (points and rebounds). He also took a team leading 17 charges this season, and was the team’s most consistent threat on both offense and defense.
Brandon King averaged 11.44 points per game and grabbed 107 rebounds on the season. Brandon was considered to be the Royals go-to-guy on defense, as he consistently kept the opposing teams players to well below their scoring averages.
Malik Harmon averaged 9.76 points per game. He led the Royals in assists with 116, including an incredible 4 to 1 assist to turnover ratio. Malik's scoring averaged consistently rose toward the end of the season.
Thomas Holley led the Royals with 193 total rebounds (7.72 per game). He also averaged 8.75 points per game. Thomas led CK to an early season victory at Molloy with an impressive 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Maynard Grant, the Royals sixth man, averaged 7.86 points per game and grabbed 157 rebounds, good enough for second on the team. Maynard averaged 10 points and 7 rebounds per game during the Royals last 10, including grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds in a playoff victory over Holy Cross.
Bryler Paige, Nick Canepa, and Zack Khan, all played crucial minutes down the stretch for the Royals. They consistently made big shots, passed to the open man, and allowed the Royals starters some much needed rest without giving an advantage to the opponent.
Rodrigo Valdez, Niko Yuvienco, Josh Senford, Tyler Martin, and Matt Young, all contributed to a number of victories throughout the course of the season. They were called upon to play under circumstances that other players do not handle nearly as well, and they succeeded consistently throughout the season.
Congratulations to the Royals on a great season.

CTK JV are City Champions! 3/6/11 - 07:15 PM
The JV Royals are City Champions
On Saturday night, in front of a standing room only crowd at Holy Cross High School, the CK JV Royals capped off an incredible season by beating the Rice Raiders 66-52 for the City Championship. CTK (#1) and Rice (#2) were the two best teams in the JV league all year, and it was only fitting that the Royals took down their arch rival to claim the title.
The game was intense from the opening tip. The Royals started strong, opening the game on an 8-3 run, led by the inside presence of freshmen center Thomas Holley. Holley forced Rice to collapse their defense around the rim, putting Rice's starting center into very early foul trouble. From there, the Royals continually built their lead as all 5 starters scored in that quarter. CK ended the first quarter up 15-11. Rice, however, would answer the Royals initial run with a run of their own in the second quarter.
The Royals played great half-court defense and continually scored on Rice both in the paint and outside the line, building a 24-11 lead. But Rice was able to rebound and run, as they went on a 15-2 run, sending the game into half-time as a 26-26 tie. Brandon King and Isaiah Cosbert carried the scoring load for the Royals going into half-time with 7 points apiece.
As the third quarter began, the Royals made a few costly turnovers that saw Rice take the lead for the first time in the game. But after the Royals were down 34-32, they took the lead on an Isaiah Cosbert 3-pointer and never looked back. CK pressed Rice and got fast-break points as a result. CK also grabbed every defensive rebound, limiting Rice to no second chance points. Thomas Holley, Brandon King, and James Coleman combined for 26 rebounds in the game, with a majority of them coming down the stretch.
With those guys rebounding, and Cosbert making key steals and outside shots, the Royals looked to Malik Harmon to put the finishing touches on what would be a great city championship win. The Royals spread the floor, and let Harmon go to work. He got to the basket at will, and converted on 60% of his foul shots. When it was all said and done, the Royals were 66-52 city champions.
Congratulations to the entire CK Royals JV team on a great season!

CTK Beats Molloy, Frosh and JV to Play Championship Doubleheader 3/2/11 - 11:15 PM
James Coleman had 15 points in CK's semi-final victory over Molloy
Christ the King was victorious in its semi-final game with Archbishop Molloy by a final score of 69-40. This was the Royals third victory of the season over Molloy. The game allows the Royals to advance to the City Championship vs. the Raiders of Rice High School, who were winners over Bishop Loughlin.
Although Molloy was up 19-15, the Royals never panicked. They went on to outscore Molloy 21-7 in the second quarter, and then 33-14 in the second half. The Royals received contributions from their entire team, headlined by James Coleman's game high 15 points and 8 rebounds. Four players for the Royals scored in double-figures, including Isaiah Cosbert (13 point), Brandon King (13 points, 6/6 from the foul line), and reserve Maynard Grant (10 points). Malik Harmon orchestrated the offense to perfection with 8 assists, and Thomas Holley grabbed 11 rebounds to limit Molloy to outside shooting at best.
Brandon King again turned in an incredible defensive effort. He held Molloys most explosive scorer to 6 points through the first three quarters. In all, the Royals gave up a total of 24 points to Molloy's top three scorers, who consistently score between 50-60 against most other teams.
CTK is now on a 14 game winning streak heading into the championship game. This will be the 7th consecutive year that Head Coach Artie Cox has led the JV Royals to the title game. The Royals have defeated Rice twice this season, including a very dramatic buzzer beater by Malik Harmon at CTK.
The championship game will be part of yet another CTK doubleheader. The Freshmen team will take on Molloy Saturday night at 6:00pm at Holy Cross, while the JV team will play Rice at 8:00pm. It should be a great night of basketball! Come out and support the Royals!

CTK JV Ready for the Playoffs 2/19/11 - 05:21 PM
Bryler Paige is averaging 8ppg off the bench for the Royals in the last week.
Christ the King's JV team has finished the regular season with an impressive 21-1 record (15-1 in league play). The Royals will now be preparing for the playoffs this coming week, as they await the winner of Holy Cross/All Hallows to see who their quarter-final opponent will be.
Forward James Coleman finished the season as the Royals leading scorer averaging 12.95 points per game, while averaging 6.6 rebounds per game and shooting an excellent 55% from the floor. Isaiah Cosbert is the teams second leading scorer at 12.86 points per game and is shooting 36% from the 3-point line.
Malik Harmon brings his solid point guard play into the playoffs averaging 9.5 points per game and an incredible 5 to 1 assist to turnover ratio. Malik is also the Royals most consistent free throw shooter (71%). He is the Royals floor general and a great team leader. Brandon King finished a stellar season averaging 11.55 points per game and has quickly become the Royals defensive stopper. King's ability to guard on the perimeter and in the paint has made the Royals very versatile.
Freshmen Center Thomas Holley and reserve Maynard Grand have a combined 15 ppg and 15 rebound per game average as they have split time between the center and power forward positions. Together they make up one of the biggest and toughest front court's in the city. Thomas had put together a string of double-doubles during a tough stretch for the Royals, and Maynard Grant has done the same down the stretch. Holley is shootin 55% from the field, while Grant is leading the team with nearly 40 blocks on the season.
Reserves Zack Khan and freshmen Bryler Paige have given the Royal's a huge lift off the bench. Zack's ability to come in the game and hit deep shots, as well as defend the others teams perimeter players gives the Royals another weapon to look too. Paige's contributions of late have been huge for the Royals as the played 7 games in 10 days. He is averaging 8 points per game in the last week, and has become another scoring option for the Royals as he can both shoot and drive the ball with success.
Nick Canepa and Niko Yuvienco have contributed solidly all season for the Royals. Nick can replace any of CK's forwards or centers and not miss a beat as he has become an excellent rebounder and close range shooter. Niko's speed and quickness has given the opposing team guards major problems. He drives past them at will and consistently creates for his teammates. Niko is the Royals best free throw shooter at 75%.
Matt Young, Tyler Martin, Josh Senford, and Rodrigo Valdez have all contributed to the success of this team. Rodrigo has seen an increase of his playing time the last few games as he continues to improve on a daily basis. Matt and Tyler both give the Royals good rebounding and hustle play off the bench. Josh Senford has become a crowd favorite at CTK. He is a spark for the Royals off the bench and has developed into a very capable guard.
Upcoming playoff schedule:
Sunday 2/27, at Xaverian High School vs. Holy Cross/All Hallows, Time TBD
If the Royals win, the following games will be:
Wednesday 3/2, at Archbishop Molloy, Opponent TBD, Time TBD

CTK JV Clinch 1st Place, Beat Xaverian 2/13/11 - 09:34 PM
Maynard Grant is averaging 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks over the last 5 games for the Royals
On Sunday, the JV Royals clinched 1st place for the city wide playoffs by beating Xaverian 71-51 in Brooklyn. The Royals, now 19-1 overall (14-1 in league play), outplayed Xaverian from start to finish.
CTK jumped out to an early 15 - 7 first quarter lead behind the defensive pressure put on Xaverian's shooters, and the hot shooting from Isaiah Cosbert and Brandon King. The Royals forced Xaverian into taking bad shots, then ran the floor for easy lay-ups and spot up shots from both King and Cosbert. That caused Xaverian to stretch their defense, opening the paint for James Coleman to score 6 of his 14 points in the second quarter.
In that second quarter, the Royals outscored Xaverian 24 - 12. Xaverian had no answer for all of the weapons CK had, which included having 7 players score in the quarter. The balanced scoring and domination of the defensive glass had the Royals on top 39 - 19 at halftime. Bryler Paige (career high 4 assists), Zack Khan (4 points), and Rodrigo Valdez (2 points) provided solid minutes off the bench, helping the Royals limit the damage done by Xaverian while the starters got a much needed rest.
Xaverian played the Royals even the rest of the way, but the Royals were the recipients of great play from their bench which secured the teams 10th straight win. Maynard Grant scored all ten of his points in the 4th quarter, as he picked up where Coleman and center Thomas Holley left off. Maynard's play over the last 5 games has proven that the Royals are one of the deepest teams in the league. He is averaging 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game over the last 5, and has given the Royals a consistent offensive threat. He is one of now 6 players averaging a minimum of 8 points per game on the season.
The win over Xaverian capped a wild week of basketball which saw the Royals play 6 games in 10 days. Four of those games were against the top four teams in the league, including back-to-back games against Bishop Loughlin and Rice, and a thrilling 2 point victory over Rice on a 3-pointer by Malik Harmon at the buzzer.
Up next for the Royals Burke Catholic (Goshen, NY) at Christ the King on Tuesday, February 15th. That will be the last home triple-header of the season for the Royals. They will close out the season with a Frosh-JV doubleheader at St. Raymond's on Wednesday, and open the playoffs with a game at Xaverian on Sunday, February 27th, against an opponent that is TBD.

CTK JV Avenge loss to Loughlin, Beat Rice to take 1st Place 2/6/11 - 06:06 PM
Freshmen Thomas Holley is averaging 9.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for the JV Royals
On Friday night at Christ the King, the Men's JV Royals took on the task of trying to defeat Bishop Loughlin. The Lions of Bishop Loughlin handed the JV team their only loss of the season, and the Royals were hungry for revenge. The Royals showed no mercy on Loughlin as they beat them convincingly 72 - 53.
The Royals jumped out to an early 20 - 12 lead on the balanced scoring of the Royals starters and a defensive intensity that the Royals have not shown yet this season. That defensive intensity paced the Royals for the game, where they gave up just 6 points in the 2nd quarter and allowed only one Bishop Loughlin player to reach double figures in scoring. When it was all said and done, the Royals had 4 players score in double figures and held a high scoring Loughlin team to just 53 points.
Brandon King and Isaiah Cosbert led the Royals in scoring with 19 points and 18 points respectively. Malik Harmon turned in a stellar performance with 10 points and a season high 7 assists to just 1 turnover. Freshmen Thomas Holley turned in one of his best performances of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Following the victory over Loughlin, the Royals traveled to Gaucho's gym in the Bronx to take on the 1st place Rice Raiders. Again, the Royals jumped all over Rice from the opening tip. They limited Rice, a team that scores nearly 85 points per game, to just 23 in the first half and 66 for the game.
The game was played in front of a standing-room only crowd, and the Royals responded with a great effort. A collective team effort allowed the Royals to control the ball, out-rebound their opponent, and dictate the tempo of the game. In the end, it was the Royals that were victorious by a score of 75 - 66. With the two big wins, the Royals have regained control of first place with an impressive 10 - 1 record in league play (15 - 1 overall).
James Coleman was the high scorer for the Royals with 23 points, which is the third time in four games he has reached that point total. His also chipped in with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Isaiah Cosbert had another big scoring game with 22 points, and was critical in the Royals being able to handle Rice's full court press.
Maynard Grant continued his rejuvenated play off the bench as he finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds. Thomas Holley also finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds, and has proven to be the most unstoppable post player on the JV level this year.
Up next for the Royals is a rematch with the Rice Raiders on Monday at Christ the King at 6:00pm. The Royals will then hit the road for more league games against St. Francis Prep (Tuesday at St. Francis Prep), St. Raymond's (Thursday at St. Raymond's), and Holy Cross (Friday at Holy Cross). Monday's game against Rice is a Frosh-JV double header, as is Thursday's game at St. Raymond's. The SFP and Holy Cross games will be part of tripleheaders.

CTK JV Picks Up League Win Vs. Molloy 1/8/11 - 10:43 PM
James Coleman helped lead the Royals to victory with his 17 points and 10 rebounds vs. Molloy
On Friday night, in front of a packed Jack Curran Gymnasium crowd, the Men's JV Royals defeated the Stanners of Archbishop Molloy by a score of 78 - 71. The win was the Royals 3rd consecutive league win and 8th straight overall as they have opened the season undefeated.
As the game began, the Royals jumped out early on the heels of their full court pressure. CK made Molloy play an uptempo game that allowed the Royals to get easy shots in transition. Malik Harmon and Isaiah Cosbert forced the Molloy guards into making bad decisions. As a result, the Royals were ahead at the end of 1 by a score of 19 - 16.
Throughout the first half, the Royals consistently stayed ahead by a margin of five points. Malik Harmon orchestrated the teams half court offense to perfection. His playmaking abilities stretched the Molloy defense, opening the paint for James Coleman and Thomas Holley to score at will in the paint. The Stanners, though, would not fold. They too, were able to stretch the Royals defense by hitting some big three pointers to keep them in the game. The Royals led at halftime 35 - 29, with James Coleman leading the Royals in scoring with 8.
As the third quarter began, the Stanners tried to pressure the Royals the length of the court, but the Royals responded by again getting the ball inside. The inside scoring allowed wing Brandon King to get open looks from outside the line, while Isaiah Cosbert and Malik Harmon continued to shred through the Molloy defense.
The fourth quarter was more of the same for the Royals. They gradually built upon their lead and it seemed as though they had closed out Molloy leading 69 - 56 with just under three minutes to play. Although Molloy made a late run, CK was able to hold on for the victory.
James Coleman finished the game with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Thomas Holley had 15 points and 14 rebounds, Malik Harmon had 17 points and 5 assists, and Brandon King and Isaiah Cosbert finished with 12 points and 10 points respectively. Maynard Grant, the Royals sixth man, finished with 7 points and 8 rebounds.
CTK will host Holy Cross on Tuesday, January 11th, in their first home triple header of the season. Game times for the triple header are 4:00, 5:45, and 7:30. Come out and support your CK Royals!

CTK JV Advances to St. Raymond's Tournament Championship 11/27/10 - 10:23 PM
Brandon King is the Royal's leading scorer, averaging 15.5 ppg so far this season
The JV Royals have opened up the season with two impressive victories in the St. Raymond's Thanksgiving Tournament. The Royals saw their first action of the season against a quality Stepinac team.
After a few shaky moments in the first quarter, the Royals were able to overcome foul trouble and withstand a late Stepinac run to be victorious 53 - 33. Brandon King and Isaiah Cosbert led the team with 15 points apiece, while Maynard Grant provided solid minutes off the bench with 8 points and 8 rebounds.
In the semi-final matchup, CK took on a Holy Cross team that cruised to victory in their first round game. It was the first game between the rival Queens schools this season.
The Royals got off to a quick start as freshmen center Thomas Holly led the way with 12 first quarter points. CK made Holy Cross play a transition game, a clear advantage for the Royals. They led at the end of one quarter 21 - 8.
As the second quarter began, Malik Harmon ran the offense efficiently, distributing the ball to shooters Brandon King and Isaiah Cosbert for open 3's. His defense forced numerous Holy Cross turnovers and allowed CK to go on a 15 - 3 run to end the quarter. Of those 15 points, Brandon King was responsible for 9 of them, hitting tough 3 pointers on 3 consecutive possessions. The Royals led 45 - 25 going into halftime.
The third and fourth quarters were more of the same. CK continually beat Holy Cross in transition and dominated them on the glass. At one point, the Royals grabbed a 30 point lead and were in complete control of the game.
Holy Cross was able to cut the lead to 20 with 6 minutes to go in the 4th, but the Royals held them off for the 78 - 57 win as they advanced to the tournament championship again where they will meet Salesion.
Thomas Holly led all scorers with 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Brandon King scored 16, and Isaiah Cosbert continued his hot shooting with 10 points. Malik Harmon filled the stat sheet with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 blocks. 2010 - 2011 CTK JV Outlook 11/12/10 - 09:05 PM
Win the NYC Championship. That is the goal the new members of the CTK Men's JV team keep talking about, and with nine returning players from last years undefeated freshmen city championship team, the goal is certainly within reach.
Coach Artie Cox enters his 17th season as the Royals JV coach. Those 17 years include coaching some of the finest players NYC has ever produced, including NBA players Lamar Odom and Craig "Speedy" Claxton. This year, Coach Cox will be looking to continue the development of the current JV players, all while striving to play in an unprecedented 7th consecutive city championship game with the Royals.
Coach Cox will rely heavily on returning starters Malik Harmon (point guard) and James Coleman (wing/post). On the freshmen level, Malik Harmon posted a 4 to 1 assist to turnover ratio, and was considered the best "floor general" in the league. His ability to run an offense, beat his defender off the dribble, and score from the outside clearly make him the Royals number one option. James Coleman, or "Mr. Double Double," will certainly improve upon his 13 ppg and 9.5 rpg average. He is an unstoppable force in the post, and consistently defends bigger and stronger post players better than any one in the league. Simply put, he is a nightmare for opposing coaches.
Returning guards Isaiah Cosbert and Zack Khan, with their improved perimeter shooting, will stretch the defense of opposing teams, adding another dimension to an already versatile group of players. Niko Yuvienco will be able to provide a different look for the Royals at the guard position. He is as fast as any guard on the team, and can penetrate a defense at will.
Key returning forwards Maynard Grant, Brandon King, and Nick Canepa will also be looked upon to contribute. Maynard’s shot blocking and rebounding ability, combined with Canepa’s toughness on defense in the paint will surely give opposing coaches a headache. Brandon King is expected to build on his stellar freshmen season with his ability to spot up from the outside as well as take any defender off the dribble.
In all, the 2010 – 2011 CK JV Royals look to continue their winning ways all the way to the city championship.

A Great Season Comes to an End 3/7/10 - 12:13 PM
The CK Royal's Mens JV team finished their season with a two point defeat at the hands of Xaverian High School in the city championship game. The loss, though, can not take away from the great season that CK had.
The JV squad returned an experienced group of player's from last year's successful freshmen team. Those players include Eric Moore, Yanni Chatham, Marthely Senat, Kalief Joyner, Eric Ishman, Chris "Speedy" Mormon, Chris Lypher, Hampton Young, Anthony Gozzi, and Jessie Higgins. Adding to the team were newcomers Evan Herzberg, Chris Quadrino, Jordan Fuchs, and Demetrius Daniels.
Together, the team was able to avenge some tough losses during their freshmen year with convincing victories over Archbishop Molloy, Bishop Loughlin, Rice, Holy Cross, and Xaverian High School. CK finished the season with an overall record of 21 - 3. That record includes going undefeated in non-league play, finishing in 1st place in their division, and earning the top seed in the city-wide playoffs.
The Royals outscored their opponents by an average of nearly 11 points per game. And although there were some close games, heroic shots at the buzzer by Demetrius Daniels, aggressive scoring at the basket by Marthely Senat, Jordan Fuchs, and Kalief Joyner, and the guard play of Jessie Higgins, Eric Moore, and Yanni Chatham almost always enabled CK to walk off the court with a victory.
The coaching staff, lead by Head Coach Artie Cox in his 16th season, put in a great effort regularly to allow the team to develop as individuals and as one cohesive unit. Coach Cox's leadership and dedication is the cornerstone of a very succussful and respected basketball program. Congratulations to all of the members of the CK Royals JV team on a very exciting and accomplished season.

CK Men's JV defeat Rice, Still Undefeated 1/6/10 - 08:04 PM
CK's defense makes a crucial stop as they defeat Rice by 9, 54 - 45

Check out highlights from the game here: http://www.intheloopny.com/post.php?s=1&p=1061
In the second game of the double header the JV teams took the floor. Game 1, which featured the freshman teams, was exciting and action packed, where as Game 2 was a different type of game. This was a scrappy type of game in which only heart can win.
Both teams had players show their heart but none more than the Royals' guard #11 Jesse Higgins, who came off the bench. Higgins was the smallest man on the court and was all over the place. He made clutch layups with the foul, and 1. It was evident that Rice came to play and forced the Royals into a style of play that they weren't used to.
#24 Yanni Chatham and #12 Eric Moore did what they do best, drive to the basket with bad intentions. Freshman #23 Jordan Fuchs showed glimpses of his potential and did not play as good as he can. He has tremendous upside and from the look of things he just may be on of the next big time players comin out of a storied program. Christ the King won the game by 9 points with the end of score being 54-45. Make sure to watch the highlights of the game.

CK Men's JV Beats Cardozo, Stays Undefeated 12/16/09 - 10:00 PM
On Wednesday night, the royals took on the Cardozo Judges and won a hard fought battle by a score of 47 - 44.
After jumping out to an early 15 - 4 lead, it looked as though the Royals would cruise through the last three quarters as they clearly outplayed their opponent. As the second quarter began, the Royals picked up where they left off in the first. Hustle plays by Yanni Chatham, successful drives to the basket by Eric Moore, and the interior post play of Kalief Joyner and Jordan Fuchs would allow the Royals to maintain an 11 point advantage entering halftime.
The Royals began the third quarter sluggish, and allowed turnovers and miscues on defense get the best of them. Cardozo would close the gap to 9 by quarters end. In the fourth, with Cardozo coming all the way back to tie the score, the Royals showed their patience and experience. Key reserve Jessie Higgins came up with a big steal and two free throws to put the finishing touches on CK's 47 - 44 victory.
Freshmen Jordan Fuchs led the team in scoring with 18 points on an impressive 57% shooting from the field. Jordan had 5 rebounds and 2 blocks as well. Eric Moore was impressive, finishing with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Yanni Chatham, the Royals "spark plug" had an off night shooting the ball, but still managed to score 9 points to accompany his hustle and intangibles that led to a number of CK fast breaks. Kalief Joyner, replacing injured starter Marthely Senat in the starting lineup, finished with 4 points and 9 rebounds. Jessie Higgins and Hampton Young provided big minutes for the Royals off the bench, making key defense stops in the closely played fourth quarter.
Next up for the Royals is Robeson HS on Tuesday evening at CK.

Christ the King's New Trio 12/15/09 - 08:45 PM
Jovanni Chatham, Eric Moore, and Demetrius Daniels Headline CK's JV Squad
*Article from www.intheloopny.com
Christ the King is one of the most prestigious high schools in the nation especially when it comes to basketball. The school has tradition, high standards, and is a basketball player factory. The program has molded players such as Lamar Odom and Speedy Claxton, who have both won NBA championships. Other players from Christ the King whose names you should recognize include former St. John’s players Erick Barkley and Omar Cook, and from a newer generation, Florida’s Irving Walker and George Mason’s Ryan Pearson. This year’s varsity team at Christ the King is definitely one of the city’s best and is one of the favorites to win the City Championship. The Royals’ freshman class is arguably one of the best in the country and may be the best the school has ever seen. However, the Junior Varsity team is nothing short of spectacular. The Royals’ JV team is lead by 3 standout players. The first of the 3 is #24 Jovanni Chatham. Chatham is a slender guard with good ball handling and makes strong moves to the basket. So far Chatham shows that he can shoot the ball with good range, both spotted up, and off the dribble, which is very impressive for someone his age. I’m looking forward to see what else this young man brings to the table this year for the Royals. The second player is #12 Eric Moore. Moore is a stocky guard with a unique skill set which stands out on the court. He and Chatham do it all, from shooting 3’s, to penetrating and dishing, to crashing the boards. However, Moore stands out on the floor with his physique and his enjoyment of the game. It is easy to tell that he is having fun out there. Moore, so far, seems to be the spark plug of the team. The third player of the new trio is #1 Demetrious Daniels. Daniels is the floor general out there for the Royals. He seems to be the engine. In a game against Wings Academy, the Royals seemed to be lost until Coach Cox subbed in Daniels. He would quickly take control of the game and lead the Royals back from a 15 point deficit. He easily penetrates defenses and can dish with ease without looking at his intended target. His high basketball IQ shows on the floor and will only improve in the program he’s in. The most impressive part about Daniels is that he is apart of the highly touted freshman class of ’09-’10. He was moved up to JV to improve the backcourt and is doing exactly that. This new trio is impressive and we at In The Loop NY eagerly wait and anticipate to see what these guys can do this year. Christ the King has a legacy of outstanding players and we wish these kids the best in their futures. Stay tuned for more on our High School Basketball coverage and for more on Chatham, Moore, and Daniels. Now you’re In The Loop.

Christ the King Defeats Wings Academy, 64 - 62 12/14/09 - 03:30 PM
Christ the King's New Trio
Wings Academy jumped out to a 6-0 lead against the Christ the King Royals at Christ the King. Christ the King’s #24 Jovanni Chatham, who finished the game with 19 points, would notch the first bucket with a contested layup to end Wings Academy’s quick run. At one point during the first half, Wings would be up by at least 15 on the Royals, lead by guard #3 Fabian Macdonald, who finished with 20 points. Christ the King would close the gap drastically before the end of the first half thanks to the impressive Point Guard play of #1 Demetrious Daniels. Daniels, 14 points, took control of the game with his good decision making and precision passing. Wings would be up 31-30 going into halftime.
Christ the King would tie the game early in the second half on an Eric Moore 3 pointer. Moore would then score on a layup to take a 38-36 lead for the Royals. The second half was a good one for Moore, who finished the game with 17 points. The third quarter would be controlled by Christ the King for the most part as they would head into the fourth quarter with a 9 point lead, 52-43. Wings Academy’s Macdonald would get help from big man, #21 Jason Melendez, who helped carry the load and kept Wings in the game. The fourth quarter would be a close one. Melendez would tie the game at 60 on a pair of free throws. Christ the King’s Chatham would then hit 1 of 2 free throws to give the Royal’s a 61-60 lead. Wings would later tie the game at 62 on a pair of free throws. Moore would connect on 1 of 2 from the line to make it a 64-62 game in the Royals’ favor. Wings would have a last second attempt and the ball would be in Macdonald’s hands but he came up short on a 3 pointer from the corner. Both teams showed they had heart but Wings would fall just short of a victory.
