Freshmen Win By 3, Advance to Quarterfinals
2/24/12 - 10:54 PM

Justin Foreman scored 20 points in CK's second round playoff victory of Cardinal Hayes

When the Royals took on Cardinal Hayes earlier in February, they made an amazing fourth quarter comeback, only to fall to Hayes by 3 points in what was a thrilling game at Christ the King. On Wednesday, the Royals had the opportunity to even the score as they faced Hayes in the second round of the intersectional playoffs at Archbishop Stepinac.

The Royals started the game by taking a 4-0 lead, and continued to impose their will on Hayes. The Royals consistently broke Hayes full court press, led by the efforts of Tahleek Weekes and Marcus Layne. They were able to score on the break at will, propelling the Royals to a 34 - 26 halftime lead. It had appeared that the Royals had a countermove for everything that Cardinal Hayes did, and that they would continue to increase their lead throughout the second half.

That was not the case, as Hayes stormed out of the gates to start the third quarter. The Royals showed vulnerability for the first time all game, and allowed Hayes pressure defense to force them into making bad decisions.

Looking to slow things down, point guard Kamron Johnson was able to settle the Royals into their half-court offense, finding Justin Foreman and Marcus Layne for open shots on the perimeter, as well as making his presence felt on the offensive glass, where he grabbed a career high 5 rebounds.

The third quarter saw the two teams exchange the lead 5 times, with Hayes holding a 47-46 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth, the two teams continued to battle, exchanging the lead on almost every possession. With the Royals down two and just two minutes to go, Justin Foreman was able to score inside, followed by a Tahleek Weeks basket and free throw that would put the Royals ahead for good. The two teams would trade baskets on the next two possessions.

On the final possession of the game, the Royals were able to stop Cardinal Hayes from making a three that would tie the game, sending CK home with a very satisfying 61-58 victory.

Marcus Layne led CK in scoring with 22 points on 9-14 shooting. Justin Foreman added 20 and continued to prove he can score against anyone. Rounding out the scoring leaders for CK was Tahleek Weekes with 13 points. Weekes also grabbed 16 rebounds, his ninth double-double on the season, an impressive feat for an undersized forward.

The Royals will now look to avenge two regular season losses to Queens rival Holy Cross as they will meet in the quarterfinals Saturday, February 24th. The game will take place at Christ the King at 7:15 pm. Please come out and support the Royals as they continue on their quest to win a city championship.

Freshmen Crush All Hallows, Advance to 2nd Round
2/19/12 - 10:32 PM

Tahleek Weekes finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds

The freshmen team had very high expectations to live up to during the regular season. They're play was sloppy at times, inconsistent at others; but on Sunday, the Royals played their most complete game of the season. They knocked off All Hallows in the opening round of the city-wide playoffs by a score of 63-40.

The Royals never trailed in this game. From the opening tip, they set the tempo of the game. Their stellar defense kept All Hallows in check, and their offense was firing on all cylinders.

All Hallows attempt to pressure the Royals into mistakes was in vein as PG Kamron Johnson (no turnovers) was able to break the press and start the Royals offense. The Royals owned the backboards as they grabbed a season-high 39 rebounds as a team, led by Tahleek Weeks who grabbed 10.

Justin Foreman and Marcus Layne were able to score from the wing at will, combining for 29 of the teams 63 points.

When it was all said and done, the Royals were winners. Tahleek Weekes led the team in scoring with 23 points and in rebounding with 10.

Marcus Layne scored 19 points, and Justin Foreman chipped in with 10. A season-high nine players scored in the game; a testament to CK's balanced offensive attack.

The Royals next game will be against Cardinal Hayes HS on Wednesday. Location and time have yet to be determined.

Good Luck to the CK Freshmen Royals

Frosh Get Revenge, Knock Off 1st Place St. Francis Prep
2/7/12 - 09:40 PM

Marcus Layne hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 7 seconds left in CK's victory over SFP

The Royals had already lost to St. Francis Prep twice this season, and were looking to improve their place in the league standings when they faced off against the Terriers at Christ the King on Tuesday. By showing their best defensive effort of the season, the Royals were able to knock off Queens rival Prep, who were at that time in first place in the Brooklyn-Queens division.

Both teams started sloppy, as the Royals missed some easy lay-ups and were unable to convert their free throws. In fact, the first basket of the game wasn't scored until there was 5 minutes left in the quarter. St. Francis Prep attempted to run their motion offense, but were never able to get in a groove as CK's team defense was at its best. Marcus Layne was able to push the Royals offensively, scoring 5 of the team's first 13 points in the 1st quarter.

The second quarter saw a reversal of fortunes for the Royals, as Prep was able to start hitting outside shots, spreading the Royals defense and in turn causing CK to faulter on the offensive end. The Royals would be outscored in the second quarter 16 - 8, allowing Prep to tie the game at 21 going into halftime.

SFP scored the first basket of the 3rd quarter, and from their it was all back-and-forth. The two teams would exchange leads throughout the second half until SFP would take what seemed to be a commanding 44-39 lead. But down 6, the Royals were able to make key defensive stops, holding Prep scoreless in the last 2 minutes of the game. Tahleek Weekes was able to score 2 baskets in transition, cutting the Prep lead to 1. The Royals would then play 25 seconds of great defense and get a big stop with just about 30 seconds left in the game.

The Royals appeared calm and patient, and ran a great half-court set which saw Weekes drive into the paint and dish to Marcus Layne for what proved to be the game winning 3 with just 7 seconds left. After a time-out by Prep, the Royals again would get another defensive stop with a deflection and steal on Prep's inbounds. And although CK missed the front end of a 1-and-1, the 2.8 seconds left on the clock were not enough for Prep to get a basket.

The Royals walked off the court with a thrilling 46-44 upset victory over St. Francis Prep. Justin Foreman led the team in scoring with 18 points. Tahleek Weekes had 13 points and 11 rebounds; and Marcus Layne (hit game-winning 3) finished with 12 points for CK.

The Royals will finish their season on Friday with the opener of a triple-header against Holy Cross. The game will start at 4:00pm at Christ the King, followed by the JV at 5:45 and a Varsity contest at 7:30.

CK Freshmen Rebound, Beat Rival Loughlin
1/31/12 - 09:08 PM

Royals starting center Rashawn Williams has proven to be a defensive stopper

The freshmen have had their struggles of late, but they put those struggles in the past Friday night when they opened a home triple-header against Brooklyn rival Bishop Loughlin with a very convincing nine point victory.

The Royals were able to put together an impressive first half against Loughlin. The Royals big three, Marcus Layne, Justin Foreman, and Tahleek Weekes were able to make the game a track meet, beating Loughlin down the court for easy buckets, and hit open threes in the half court. Their efforts allowed the Royals to take a 27 - 18 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Although the Royals struggled in the 3rd quarter to maintain their lead, allowing Loughlin to get as close as 2 points, they were able to step up their defensive intensity. This allowed the Royals to make crucial stops, and continue to score at will in an up-tempo game. The Royals led at one point by 15 points, and left the gym with a 54 - 46 win, their largest margin of victory this season.

Justin Foreman led the team in scoring with 21 points, followed by Marcus Layne's 18. Tahleek Weekes had his best overall performance of the season, scoring 11 points and grabbing a very impressive 20 rebounds.

The Royals made a season high nine three pointers for the game.

Rashawn Williams again showed his defensive ability in preventing Loughlins forwards from scoring in the paint, a big contrinution to the Royals victory.

Ryan Ross had another stellar game, scoring 3 points and playing pressure defense on the perimeter that gives the Royals a huge lift off the bench.

The Royals have a tough weekend ahead. They will play St. Raymond's (9-0 in league play) and Cardinal Hayes (7-3 in league play) on back-to-back days Friday and Saturday. Friday's game is at St. Raymond's at 4:00 pm, while Saturday's game will be at Christ the King. Tip-off for the Cardinal Hayes game will be at 11:30am.

Down 17 in the 4th Quarter, Royals Storm Back, Beat Rival Loughlin at the Buzzer
1/7/12 - 09:52 PM

Marcus Layne scored 28 points in his first game back from injury, leading the Royals to a thrilling 1 point victory

On Friday night, the CK Royals traveled to Fort Greene in an anticipated match-up between long standing rival Bishop Loughlin. The game lived up to the hype and ended in dramatic fashion.

The Royals jumped out to an early 7-2 lead on stellar defense and a smooth half court offense. Early on, Justin Foreman had the hot hand, as he was able to both get to the basket and score on pull-ups, displaying his mid-range game. However, that was not enough to keep Bishop Loughlin in check, as they quickly turned the tide of the game. Bishop Loughlin outscored the Royals 16-9 in the last three minutes of the first quarter, giving them a 7 point lead going into the second quarter.

The Royals would struggle to keep Loughlin's bigs out of the paint, where CK seemed to be outmatched. Tahleek Weekes stepped his game up by scoring 6 points in the quarter, making sure that the Royals did not get blown out of the gym. Yet, even with Weekes' efforts, the Royals trailed going into half-time by a score of 36 - 29.

CK came out flat in the second-half, with only CK guard Marcus Layne being able to establish an offensive presence for the Royals. With Loughlin pressuring CK up and down the court, and the Royals failing to convert easy lay-ups, it appeared as though the Royals may be staring at their first league loss of the season. Bishop Loughlin increased their lead to 56-40 going into the pivotal 4th quarter.

After a quick basket by Loughlin, and two minutes of sloppy play by both teams, the Royals made a run that would stun the packed crowd. With Weekes and Foreman both playing with 4 fouls, CK gambled and picked up Bishop Loughlin full court. Solomen Zarzuela and Ryan Ross were able to keep Loughlin's guards in the backcourt long enough for them to fatigue, and then force them into making poor decisions in the half-court. Those bad decisions cost Loughlin, as they would turn the ball over on three consecutive possessions and see their lead reduced from 18 to 7. Showing signs of life, Loughlin again began to play full court defense, but the Royals passed right through it. Marcus Layne was able to dribble penetrate Loughlin defense for a number of acrobatic lay-ups, include a crucial and-one play that cut Loughlin's lead to nine.

Trailing by a score 67-65, Marcus Layne would get through the teeth of Loughlin's defense to make a lay-up, and the ensuing free-throw as he was fouled on the play.  The very pro-Loughlin crowd was silenced, and the CK fans in attendance errupted with cheers, making their presence felt. Now leading by one, 68-67, Loughlin would use the clock, get to the basket, and score on a put-back and proceed to go to the line for one shot. The free throw was made, and it appeared as though Loughlin would escape with a victory.

The Royals inbounded the ball, down 1 point, and were able to get it to Foreman (averaging 34 ppg in his last 2 games). Foreman would go coast to coast, and pull up for an 8 foot shot from the middle of the paint that would go in off the backboard with just 5 seconds left in the game. Loughlin would not be able to get another shot off, and CK walked off the court with a thrilling 1-point victory over arch-rival Bishop Loughlin.

CK's big three of Marcus Layne (28 points), Justin Foreman (23 points), and Tahleek Weekes (15 points and 14 rebounds) combined for 66 of the Royals 71 points.

The Royals have evened their record at 4-4 (2-0 in league play).

Up next for the Royals is a league contest vs. Xaverian at Christ the King on Sunday, January 8th. That will be the second game of the day, preceded by the Varsity B contest, and followed by a JV and Varsity game, all against Xaverian.

Freshmen Preparing for the Upcoming League Schedule
12/30/11 - 08:55 PM

Kamron Johnson has been playing the point for the Royals

The freshmen have been working hard over the holiday break to prepare for what should certainly be a very difficult upcoming league schedule.

Early Season Recap

The Royals have a 2-4 record, with their victories coming against Bishop Ford and St. John the Baptist. Although they have four losses, three of those losses were by 5 points or less. The freshmen team has been competitive in every game, a great accomplishment considering they have played without starter Marcus Layne, and are still be hampered by injuries to other key players. However, the Royals remain confident that they can compete with any opponent they step on the court against.

Currently, Justin Foreman and Tahleek Weekes are the team leading scorers, averaging 20 and 15 points respectively. They are also the teams two leading rebounders (7.5 rebounds per game apiece).

Kamron Johnson and Marcus Layne have done a good job handling the ball for the Royals, and have also provided a scoring lift when needed at critical points in the game.

Centers Rashawn Williams, Nick Torre, and Shawn Charles have all shown a remarkable improvement in their ability defend the other teams biggest and strongest players, while their offensive production seems to increase every game.

Reserve guards Jaymes Marshall, Solomen Zarzuela, and Bryan Marmolejo have grown accustomed to playing important minutes down the stretch of the Royals close games. Solomen is becoming one of the Royals “defensive stoppers,” while Jaymes is capable of hitting the open three and Bryan has become a much improved ball handler.

Other reserves Ryan Ross, Joe Idyahia, Jabari Bell, and Karim Diouf all share minutes at the forward positions. Each have been able to provide the Royals with positive energy off the bench; and are willing and able to do whatever is necessary for the Royals to get a win.

Upcoming Schedule:

The Royals will play Molloy at Christ the King on Wednesday, January 4th. They will then travel to Brooklyn to take on rival Bishop Loughlin in a triple header on Friday, followed by a Sunday matinee tripleheader against Xaverian.

Justin Foreman Has Big Game, But Royals Lose at Home
12/21/11 - 08:21 AM

The CK Freshmen team had gotten off to a sluggish start with just two wins in their first five games. On Wednesday, they were looking to rebound from a tough loss to St. Anthony's last week with a win against league opponent Archbishop Stepinac, which was scheduled as a non-league contest. The Royals, though, would have to play with out starter and 3rd leading scorer Marcus Layne, who is recovering from an injury.

Early on it seemed as though the Royals were going to be in for a long day, as Stepinac consistently scored in their half-court offense. And with another Royals starter suffering an injury, starter Kamron Johnson, the odds were against CK in staying competitive.

As it turned out, the Royals, aided by the stellar play of the bench by Ryan Ross, Solomen Zarzuela, and Bryan Marmolejo were able to erase a 13-point first half deficite and cut the lead down to three, 35-32 at halftime.

The second half, though, saw the Royals come out of the locker room flat and fall behind by 10 points quickly. The Royals effort to get back in the game repeatedly was halted by Stepinac, as they would maintain their lead in deny the Royals the win.

In a losing effort, Justin Foreman clearly had his best game of the young season. He poured in 33 points while trying to keep the Royals in the game. Justin made nine out of twelve free throws, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 2 assists.

The Royals will now have two weeks off for the holidays, and will begin preparing for the difficult league schedule that will start on January 4th against Archbishop Molloy at Christ the King.

Freshmen Bounce Back, Beat St. John the Baptist
12/11/11 - 07:45 PM

Tahleek Weekes scored 22 points in a victory over St. John the Baptist

After what was a dissapointing loss to St. Mary's in the IAABO tournament, the Royals bounced back in their home opener with a win over St. John the Baptist of Long Island. With the win, CK evened their record at 2-2.

The Royals led from the start of the game, as Kamron Johnson and Marcus Layne moved the ball on offense to get their teammates open shots, while playing stellar defense on the oppositions guards. Tahleek Weekes was able to score inside, and the Royals quickly saw what was a small lead balloon to 10 at halftime, 36-26.

The Royals continued to keep their foot on the gas, as their lead grew to 15 points late in the third quarter on the heels of Justin Foreman and Tahleek Weekes play inside and on the break. The freshmen though, managed to let St. John the Baptist back in the game with some untimely turnovers and a few easy missed shots. St. John's would cut the lead to 58-56 with just over three minutes left in the game.

The Royals would regain their composure and make all the right plays down the stretch, holding St. Johns to just 2 points in the final three minutes. The Royals would win the game by a score of 68-58.

Tahleek Weekes led the team in scoring with 22 points. Justin Foreman scored 17 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Kamron Johnson had his best offensive game of the season with 9 points and 4 assists.

CK will have a busy schedule, as the play Mount St. Michael on Tuesday, Fordham Prep on Wednesday, and St. Anthony (LI) on Friday, all at Christ the King.

Freshmen Go 1-1 in IAABO, Play St. Mary's on Thursday
12/5/11 - 09:17 PM

Justin Foreman has averaged 22 points per game for the Royals so far this season

Over the weekend, the freshmen got their season off to a hectic start in the annual freshmen IAABO tournament at Molloy. The weekend included a two point victory over Bishop Ford, and a one point loss to long-time Queens rival St. Francis Prep in the semi-finals.

On Saturday, the Royals started off the game by playing stellar defense and holding Bishop Ford to just 4 first quarter points. That would not deter Bishop Ford from making a first half run, as they closed the deficit to 19-16 just before halftime.

The second half saw the Royals two wings, Justin Foreman and Tahleek Weekes, score on the break and get to the paint at will. Their offensive efforts were enough to put Christ the King over the top with a 45 – 43 victory. Justin Foreman led the Royals in scoring with 24 points, while shooting 6 for 8 from the free throw line. Tahleek Weekes (7 rebounds) and Marcus Layne (3 steals) both scored 10 points to round out the scoring for CK.

On Sunday, the Royals took on St. Francis Prep in the semi-finals. The game was back and forth from the start; with St. Francis taking an early 15-12 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. As the furious pace of the game continued, Prep held on to a slim one point lead, 24-23 going into halftime.

As the second half began, Prep put on a full court press that almost took the Royals out of the game. With just 1:30 seconds to go in the half, the Royals were down by a score of 42-30. A timeout ensued, and the Royals made a furious run, ignited by their defense that took them into the early goings of the fourth quarter and put them back on top by a score of 43-42. The defensive pressure of Solomen Zarzuela, Nick Torre, and Marcus Layne allowed the Royals to stay in the game and have a chance to win. However, the Royals efforts were in vein, as they would lose a heart-breaker by a final score of 50-49.

Justin Foreman led the Royals in scoring with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Tahleek Weekes also had a big game for the Royals, scoring 15 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Marcus Layne added 10 points for the Royals, who are now 1 – 1 in the early goings.

CK will play for 3rd place in the IAABO tournament on Thursday, December 8th, at 5:00pm vs. St. Mary’s (Manhasset) at Archbishop Molloy.

The Royals will follow that game with a Sunday matinee vs. St. John the Baptist from Long Island at Christ the King RHS.

Adonis Comes Up Big As Royals Reach Frosh Final
3/20/11 - 11:11 PM

Adonis Delarose blocks a shot in CK's semi-final victory over Rice

Adonis Delarosa's 20 points were part of a spectacular all-around effort that saw him help his Christ the king team to a come from behind 86-81 win over Rice in the CHSAA "AA" Freshman semi-final at Xaverian on  Tuesday. They will face top seeded Molloy which got 17 points from C.J. Davis to earn a 61-57 win over a tough Bishop Loughlin team which got 23 points from talented wing man Mike Williams.

There's an old boxing notion that says that contrasting styles make for great fights and with that in mind it would be easy to imagine Christ the King, with the 6'8" wide body Delarosa in the middle, as the hoops power puncher and to imagine Rice, with their long,  athletic players as the fast moving counter puncher. What fans saw was indeed a terrific battle in which two very talented freshman teams tried to impose their style on the game.

And for much of the game the Raiders had done just that. They rode terrific outside shooting with a little help from their press to a 44-40 halftime advantage. While the press did not create many turnovers, thanks largely to Delarosa's soft hands and passing acumen providing a reliable release in the Royals press offense, it did force many quick shots. The Raiders did a terrific job converting transition chances thanks to the quick slashing moves of talented guard Shavar Newkirk, and wing prospect Chris Robinson who worked beautifully from the high post, showing a fine mid-range jumper and a knack for moving without the ball. Those two combined with Torrey Ferguson to give Rice a quick 6-0 burst out of the half time locker room that would expand their halftime advantage to 50-40.

Christ the King regrouped and went to Delarosa inside and he quickly spun on the left block, powered in a layup and converted a three point play. His work in the paint and soft touch under the basket, combined with clutch triples from Brandon Caracamo  helped the Royals on a 21-10 spurt that saw them finally take the lead 61-60 on a Caracano triple with just under a minute to go. From their two great teams traded haymakers as the game see-sawed back and forth. Robinson finished with a game high 30 points for Rice while Newkirk added 18 but the Royals made enough key plays down the stretch to garner the win. Caracamo would hit two more triples in the final quarter that both helped short circuit rallies for Rice and guard Abolaji Soyemi scored in transition. The two guards would tie their pivot man for team high scoring honors with 20 points. Wingman Chancellor Ellis struggled with his outside shot and had just 10 points but those included four free throws that helped salt away the win.

While several Royals' players contributed to a great win, Delarosa's strong but nimble presence in the paint was ultimately the difference in the game.  If there was a single play that typified how good he was, and demonstrated the progress he's made during the year it's this one: After a Rice basket early in the fourth quarter he took a pass at mid court to break the press. He then did what coaches have told big men in that position to do forever, looked opposite and fired a perfect pass to Ellis on the left wing. A moment later Ellis fired a quick pass to his center, who had sprinted from half court to the rim for a basket. It's a play that both the passer and the finisher could not have made a month ago and was an indication of what a fine job Delarosa and all the Royals have done to get better. That hard work earned them a great win and a well-deserved birth in Saturday's final at Holy Cross.

CTK Frosh Beat Rice, Advance to City Championship
3/1/11 - 10:17 PM

Adonis Delarosa will be looking to lead CTK to the City Championship vs. Molloy on Saturday

On Tuesday night at Xaverian High School, the freshmen Royals (#3 seed) attempted to beat Rice High School (#2 seed) for the first time this season. The winner would earn the right to play for a city championship.

In what was a successful regular season for the Royals, the only team they were unable to beat was the Raiders. They orchestrated a great comeback at the Gaucho's gym, after being down nearly 20 points, but ran out of time as they lost by a close margin. The next game for the Royals saw them match up against Rice again on their home floor at CTK, but again, the Royals fell to the very talented Raiders.

Christ the King had one last shot at the Raiders, and they capitiaized. After being down at half-time 44-40, and quickly falling behind 50-40, the Royals turned up their level of play and pushed Rice to the brink of elimination. The Royals used a 21-10 run at the end of the third quarter that saw he Royals go up 61-60 with just under a minute to play in the third. Rice would answer back by hitting a huge 3 pointer to again gain the advantage. The Royals, though, would not back down. Chancellor Ellis hit a huge three, Jashanti Allen scored and And-1, Adonis Delarosa and BJ Soyemi would grab key rebounds, and Brandon Carcamo would hit 2 backbreaking 3 pointers in the fourth quarter that saw the Royals show who was the better team.

CTK won the game by a score of 85-81. The story of the game was the free throw shooting of the freshmen. Allen, Soyemi, and Ellis combined to shoot over 80% from the charity stripe for CK, all but securing the hard-fought victory. Adonis Delarosa again proved to be an unstoppable force in the paint, and Carcamo reassured all the CK fans in attendance that he can make big time shots.

In the other semi-final game, Archbishop Molloy (#1 seed) beat Bishop Loughlin (#4 seed) by 5 to earn the right to play the Royals. Molloy finished the season an impressive 15-1 in league play, with their only loss coming at the hands of the CTK Royals. This will be the 4th meeting between the two archrivals, and the second consecutive year the teams will square off in the city championship game.

Game time will be at 6:00pm at Holy Cross High School on Saturday, March 5th. Come out and support your CK Royals.

CTK Freshmen Ready for Busy League Schedule
1/27/11 - 08:53 PM

The Freshmen Royals have opened the season with an impressive 9 - 2 overall record, including a 6 - 1 start in league play. The only losses the Royals have suffered have come at the hands of Archbishop Molloy. The first of the two losses to Molloy came in the IAABO championship game, in which the Royals fell by 7 in a thrilling game. The second loss to Molloy saw the Royals come all the way back from a 21 point deficit and make Molloy sweat for what was just a 4 point victory.

The freshmen have been flawless against everyone else. 6'9" big man Adonis Delarosa has been unstoppable in the paint as the Royals center. He can score in the post at will and makes rebounding for opposing teams a nighmare. Forward Chancellor Ellis has beaten teams with his impressive range from beyond the three point line as well as his skilled post play and rebounding abilities. Jashanti Allen has been the floor general the Royals freshmen have needed. His ability to make good passes and score when needed have made the Royals a very difficult team to guard.

Out of the entire Royals team, sharp shooting guard Brandon Carcamo has been the most consistent. He has hit big shots, helped distribute the ball to his teammates, play stellar defense, and quietly racks up a lot of points. The quality play from the starters is rounded out by guard BJ Soyemi. His ability to play lockdown defense and run the fast break has given the Royals a very balanced offensive attack and a go-to-man on the defensive end.

The Royals have recieved great contrinutions off the bench from all of their players in big games.

The Freshmen team will continue their quest toward the city championship with the opening game of a tripleheader on Friday vs. St. Raymond's at Christ the King High School. After a Sunday matchup with Archbishop Molloy at home, the Royals will proceed to play 6 league games in 10 days.

The Royals are currently in 3rd place in the league behind only Molloy (8-0) and Rice (7-1).

Saturday's contest between Christ the King Royals and the Archbishop Molloy Stanners featured the two top tiered freshmen teams in the CHSAA.

In a way, the freshmen championship is more pressurized than the varsity chip in that you only get one shot at reaching that goal in your entire high school career. On this night at Holy Cross high school in Flushing, NY, that honor would belong to the Royals as they upended the Stanners, 65-52.

Launched by the play of Isaiah Lewis, C.T.K. would go into the second quarter up, 14-11 but Isaiah Tucker would lead Molloy on a 6-2 run to give the Stanners a 17-16 lead with 4:45 remaining in the half.

Lewis, with the aid of Brandon King would retake the lead for the Royals but Tyler Bennett and big man Marko Kozul would give the Stanners a 26-25 lead going in the locker room.

Molloy would maintain their lead for the first two minutes with a strong defensive stance but Kentrall Brooks would go 2 for 2 from the charity stripe to once again give the Royals the advantage by a point.
Christ the King would extend their lead as James Coleman would score in the paint while drawing Kozul's fourth foul with 3:36 to go in the third.

Bennett would have a impactful game closing the gap for Molloy but Jonathan Severe would power up in the paint to put the Royals up 37-35. Lewis would then steal the ball to score with 54 seconds on the clock and after a Stanners turnover the freshman would run the clock down and feed the ball to Coleman to end the quarter.

Starting the fourth quarter in a 41-35 disadvantage, Coleman would quickly score, punting C.T.K.'s lead to 8 points.

Tucker would try to keep Molloy in the hunt but Severe and Coleman would tag team to give the Royals a 50-39 lead with 4:53 to go.

Severe's relentless attack inside and key blocks on defense would result in a 13-4 run that left the young Stanners squad in a 54-39 debacle. Bennett would provide a one-man 5-0 run for Molloy, leaving them still down by 12 points with 3:54 left in regulation.

Any hope of a run was dashed as Kozul would get his fifth foul with 2:36 on the clock. Still down 12, Molloy would have to settle for second place.

Isaiah Lewis scored a game high 23 point with Jonathan Severe scoring 14 points. Tyler Bennett paced Molloy with 19 points with Isaih Tucker adding 15 points.

CK Freshmen Are Undefeated City Champions
3/6/10 - 11:40 PM

CK's 2009-2010 Undefeated Freshmen City Champions

On Saturday night, the Christ the King Freshmen Royals finished an undefeated City Championship season with a 65 - 52 victory over Archbishop Molloy HS. In front of a packed Holy Cross gymnasium, the Royals used a huge 4th quarter scoring run to close out the game with a win.

Early on, it appeared as though the game would go down to the wire. With both teams trading baskets, and James Coleman and Kentrall Brooks both sitting with early foul trouble, CK would call upon Isaiah Lewis and reserve Brandon King to pick up the slack on offense. Lewis scored 8 of his game high 23 points in the quarter, while King would provide a spark off the bench and chip in with 4 points. Maynard Grant would also step up and play big minutes on the defensive end.

During the second quarter, King and Lewis would again provide all of the Royals offense, accounting for 9 out of the teams 11 points. Molloy outscored the Royals in the second quarter 15 - 11, sending the CK into their locker down by 1. This was the first half time deficit Christ the King faced all year. Isaiah Tucker and Marco Kozul kept the Stanners in the game, taking advantage of the early foul trouble being suffered by CK.

As the third quarter began, Jonathon Severe and James Coleman would awaken and have a huge impact for the Royals. The two combined for 13 points in the quarter. Coleman scored his points in the paint at will, as Molloy's front line just did not have the muscle to slow him down. Severe was able to force turnovers on the perimeter and convert them into the points the Royals needed. Their offensive production, along with the defensive presence of 6'6" center Kentrall Brooks (4 blocked shots), allowed the Royals to change the momentum in their favor entering the final quarter.

In the 4th quarter; CK's Coleman, Severe, Lewis, Brooks, and point guard Malik Harmon ran their offense masterfully, scoring on the perimeter and in the paint at will. Malik Harmon's steady play allowed the Royals to settle into their potent offense that was just too much for Molloy. CK's defense was stellar, holding Molloy's starting front line to a combined 11 points in the second half. When it was all said and done, Christ the King won the City Championship.

Isaiah Lewis led the team with 23 points, followed by Severe and Coleman's combined 28 points (14 apiece), of which they scored 26 in the second half.

Congratulations to all of the members of the team and coaching staff on a great season!

CTK beats Rice, Clinches 1st Place
2/7/10 - 10:24 PM

Brandon King scores 14 pts to lead CK over Rice

The Christ the King Men's Freshmen team clinched the top seed in the city-wide playoffs with a 75 - 71 win over the Raiders of Rice High School Sunday.

Not to be overshadowed by Super Bowl Sunday, the freshmen showed why their game was the game to watch. With an estimated crowd of over 1000 people for the 12:00 start, it appeared as though Rice was going to run away with the game early. They jumped out to a 7 - 2 lead, only to see the Royals charge right back and tie the score at 16 by the end of the 1st quarter. Leading the charge for the Royals was Jonathon Severe and Isaiah Lewis, as they came up with big steals in the press and converted a number of transition baskets.

The second quarter saw back and forth action as both teams traded basket. James Coleman asserted himself inside, showing why he was the most dominating offensive player in the paint. He scored 7 points in the quarter, allowing Lewis and King to get wide open shots, which they would convert. Midway through the quarter, Severe changed the momentum in favor of the Royals with a monster one handed dunk in transition that brought the crowd to their feet. The Royals would go into half-time with a commanding 13 point lead.

The third quarter saw key reserves Brandon King and Maynard Grant show why they are such valuable members of the team. They played stellar defense, out-muscled Rice on the boards, and converted open shots at will. CK went in to the fourth quarter up 55 - 48.

Though Rice made a late charge, CK was able to hold on for the victory. James Coleman lead the Royals in scoring (22 points) and rebounding (12 rebounds), in addition to shooting a season best 8 for 13 from the foul line. Kentrall Brooks continued to block shots at a record pace, leading the Royals in that category with 6. The true MVP honors for the game belong to the Royals bench. Maynard Grant and Brandon King combined for 22 points, and a combined 10 of 16 from the foul line. It was Brandon King's 2 free throws with under 6 seconds left in the game that secured the victory, putting the Royals up by 4, 75 - 71. Grant played huge minutes in place of Kentrall Brooks, who had to fight through foul trouble for much of the second half. His contrinutions on defense, and ability to score in the paint were pivotol in allowing CK to come away with the win. Both King and Grant played their best games of the season.

The Royals have 2 games remaining on the season, both league contests. They will take on Holy Cross in the first game of a triple-header on Friday, February 12th, at Holy Cross High School (4:00pm). They finish out the regular season on Monday the 15th at St. Raymond's.

CK Freshmen Hold Off Xaverian, 72 - 66
1/11/10 - 08:14 PM

James Coleman leads the Royals to victory with 23 points and 11 Rebounds

After two close games against league opponents Rice and Molloy, CTK was again tested in a hard fought game with the Clippers of Xaverian High School. The game was close from the start, as both teams would exchange the lead several times in the early going. Lamel Faizon led the charge for Xaverian, as he penetrated the lane with success, distributing to his teammates and scoring in the paint. Though; CTK would hold a five point advantage at the end of the first eight minutes (18 - 13) behind the hot outside shooting of guards Jonathon Severe, Isaiah Lewis, and Malik Harmon.

As the second quarter began, and Lewis and Severe both encountered foul trouble, James Coleman began to take advantage of his size and strength in the paint. He scored 6 points in the quarter, and continually kept the Clippers to one and done as he snatched every rebound. For the Clippers, they took advantage of CTK's mistakes by hitting open three-pointers and converting their free throw attempts. The Royals would go in to half-time down 34 - 32, the first half-time deficit for the freshmen all season.

Entering the third, the Royals used their athleticism and turned up the defensive intensity, causing the Clippers to turn the ball over. James Coleman continued his strong play by getting out on the break and converting easy lay-ups in transition. Kentrall Brooks, the Royals starting Center, would make his defensive presence known by blocking two shots and changing countless others.  Isaiah Lewis and Jonathon Severe would continue their hot shooting, combining for 12 points in the quarter. Maynard Grant and Isaiah Cosbert both provided contributions on defense and offense, allowing the Royals to maintain a steady flow, and control the tempo of the game. Nick Canepa would also contribute, being forced to guard Clippers that had a clear size advantage.

The Royals would gain a ten point advantage with 3 minutes to play in the 4th (67 - 57), but would have to hold off a Xaverian comeback for the win. Malik Harmon was instrumental in protecting the ball on offense in the latter stages of the game. Harmon did not commit a single turnover, and finsihed with 7 assists, finding open teammates inside the paint and on the wing. Brandon King, a key reserve, would prove to be invaluable on the defensive end for the Royals as he was able to prevent the guards for Xaverian from getting in the paint and scoring.

For the Royals, James Coleman finished with a game high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Kentrall Brooks added 11 rebounds as well. Isaiah Lewis and Jonathon severe scored 22 and 16 respectively, on a combined 17 for 28 shooting from the field. 10 Royals saw action in this game, indicating the depth of the bench and the ability of all of the players to contribute to an overall great team win.

Up next for the Royals will be a freshmen JV doubleheader vs. St. Raymonds on January 19th on CK's home court.

Men's Freshmen Beat Rice, Improve to 7 - 0
1/6/10 - 07:57 PM

Jonathon Severe scores from the line during CK's 71 - 66 victory over the Rice Raiders

   *Article courtesy of www.intheloopny.com

The Christ the King Royals took on the Rice High School Raiders at Gauchos gym in Game 1 of a freshman, junior varsity doubleheader. This was a see-saw game with the lead changing back and forth throughout most of the game. The standout moment of the game came in the 1st half when #23 Jonathan Severe, who finished with 16 points, flashed down the court on a fast break and pulled off a one-hand tomahawk dunk, LeBron style. The dunk was a momentum shifter for the time being.

The Raiders were led by guard #3 Francisco Infante, who finished with 15 points. The Raiders would tie the game at 56 with 4:39 left in the fourth quarter. The Royals’ Isaiah Lewis, who finished with a game high 31 points, would knock down a clutch jumper to give the Royals a 58-56 lead. Christ the King would not give up the lead again winning the game 71-66.

This was a tough game for both teams and Christ the King was able to pull it off because of a tough player, #32 James Coleman, who finished with 15 points. Coleman was all over the place scoring, grabbing rebounds, playing scrappy defense, and taking crucial charges. Coleman does it all for the Royals, without saying a word or losing his composure. This kind of play is exciting and does not fly under the radar. We at In The Loop, and basketball lovers around the world notice it.

CK Freshmen Boys Win Preseason IAABO Title
12/14/09 - 11:31 AM

Congratulations to the Christ the King Freshmen Basketball team for winning the Preseason IAABO Title, beating Holy Cross 66-53!

Championship game MVP: Isaiah Lewis
Tournament MVP: Malik Harmon

*Article from NYHoops.com:

Christ the King Freshmen outscored Holy Cross 27-19 in the third quarter to break open what had been a close game. They then got key plays down the stretch primarily from guards Isaiah Lewis and Jonathan Severe to secure a well earned 66-53 victory and the championship of the John Fouchet Memorial Freshman Tournament at St. Francis Prep.

Although both teams feature players with great talent and athleticism, the first half was very much a tactical game.  Holy Cross used a well-executed zone defense to negate the ability of CK’s guards to penetrate and make plays.  Both Lewis and Severe were impatient, driving the lane sometimes after only one or two passes and forcing some tough, quick and off balance shots. And while the Royals would take a 26-22 advantage into the locker room, the low score was an indication that Holy Cross had the tempo of the game where they liked it.  While the zone defense was a terrific team effort, guards Omar and Terrell Williams provided the first half offensive punch for the Knights with 8 and 6 points respectively. More importantly perhaps they forced CK to go to its bench as key players picked up early fouls.

The improvement in Christ the King’s play was almost immediate as the third quarter began. On their first possession they went inside to developing big man Kentrall Brooks who powered in a basket from the right block. Then after point guard Malik Harmon, who was rewarded for a terrific effort throughout the tournament with MVP honors. was forced to leave the game after two fouls in rapid succession gave him three for the game, Lewis stepped in and began to make plays.
“My touch was off”, Lewis said of his first half struggles.  But in the final two quarters he not only found his shooting touch, connecting primarily from middle distance and on one triple, but found his passing touch as well.  He did a terrific job finding Severe in transition, involving both Brooks and James Coleman on the interior for baskets and using his length on defense to get deflections and help the Royals get transition hoops. The four point half time advantage was tripled to 12 points (53-41) as the fourth quarter began.

To their credit the Knights were able to regain their footing Christ the King’s decisive spurt.  Coach Kevin Hamilton moved 6’2” Akil Sprull to the top of the key in their zone offense and he was effective driving into gaps and finishing.  He and 6’4” Chris Hayles were the Knights most effective players throughout the tournament while 6’2” Ryan Wilson, a player not on our September list showed terrific rebounding ability, length and athleticism and should be added to any future prospect list we make for 2013. Reserve guard Omar Davis also made two terrific drives and hit a clutch jumper as the Knights tried to get within striking distance.

Christ the King showed its balance and depth as they kept the Knights at arms length in the final period.  Severe, who finished with 17 points hit a rally-stopping triple from the right corner after reserve Brandon King had taken a pass from Lewis and connected from the left side. For Christ the King Lewis finished with a game high 18 points while Sprull and Omar Williams led Holy Cross with 10 each.

It’s quite possible fans and scouts in attendance yesterday got an early preview of the freshman city championship game that will take place in March of 2010.  These two teams, along with St. Ray’s in the New York Archdiocese appear to have the top freshman classes. The Knights and Royals had a great week to open the season and these two talented and well coach teams set the course for a great season of improvement and success.
