Royals out last Bishop Loughlin in Overtime 2/15/13 - 10:47 AM
The Women's Varsity Basketball team improved its CHSAA record to 9-2 with a dramatic 68-67 victory over Bishop Loughlin in front of a boisterous Senior Night crowd at CK. Led by Junior Kristen Drogsler's season high 26 points and Kollyns Scarbrough chipping in 23 the Royals led through much of the contest. But there was no quit in Bishop Loughlin. Senior Immani Tate connected on 3 consecutive 3 point goals that brought the Lions back to life. The overtime was dominated but the Royals as Senior Taylor Butigian continued her great play on both ends of the floor.
After the game, all of the members of the Class of 2013 involved in winter sport were recognized with their parents. Next game is Friday at Nazareth, game time is 5:00`.

Calhoun shows Gill St. Bernard's who is King 2/3/13 - 11:02 PM
by Dylan Butler on Sun, Feb 3, 2013
It was a showdown of two of the Tri-State’s top two teams, but what brought UConn coach Geno Auriemma to Park Slope Saturday was a battle of two of the best juniors in the country.
It was No. 6 Christ the King led by Sierra Calhoun against Taylor Rooks and No. 3 Gill St. Bernard's, a marquee matchup Calhoun has thrived in time and again.
“I think she always rises up and wants that challenge,” Christ the King coach Bob Mackey said.
Calhoun didn’t disappoint, scoring a game-high 35 points to lead the Royals to a 73-62 win at the Bishop Ford Coaches vs. Cancer tournament.
It was the second time Auriemma watched Calhoun, who also had eight rebounds and three assists, in person this season. The other was an anticipated encounter with Ossining and UConn-bound senior Saniya Chong a month ago.
This time Calhoun was taking on Rooks, who has drawn interest from Stanford, Maryland and Syracuse.
“She’s a great player and I respect her a whole lot,” Rooks said. “We were both going hard all game.”
Rooks, who finished with 34 points, couldn’t help but notice Auriemma sitting in the top row of the stands.
“It’s amazing,” Rooks said. “You definitely notice it, but when I’m on the court, I focus on the game and I block everything out and try to do everything I can to win.”
While both juniors lived up to expectations, Christ the King (12-6) pulled out the win because of a balanced effort. When Calhoun went to the bench with foul trouble, the Royals didn’t miss a beat.
Birthday girl Kollyns Scarbrough had 10 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists, Deja Johnson had 10 points, four assists and three rebounds and Kristen Drogsler had eight points, nine assists and five rebounds.
“Everyone stepped up and played great defensively and offensively when I was out of the game,” Calhoun said. “The intensity didn’t drop.”
Led by Scarbrough, Christ the King won the battle on the glass and converted 21-of-26 free throws with Calhoun going 16-of-16, including 4-of-4 in the final 54.2 seconds to seal the win.
“Today my shooting game wasn’t on par, so I put my head down and made sure I got my rebounds and make sure I get my teammates opportunities to score,” Scarbrough said.
Gill St. Bernard coach John Slackman said his team’s troubles in both areas led to the loss.
“We’re usually a great foul shooting team and we usually miss one or two a game and we missed seven or eight,” he said. “That’s the difference right there.”
The loss snapped a 14-game winning streak for Gill St. Bernard's (14-3), which also received 13 points from Trevana Bennett.
“It was an eye opener for us,” Slackman said. “Even though we took it on the chin there were moments in the game we thought we had it. It’s going to prepare us for the country run and tournament time.”
The victory was big for Christ the King because it came on the heels of a difficult loss to Shipley (PA) last Sunday.
However the Royals have little time to celebrate, hosting Coolidge (D.C.) Sunday, taking on Archbishop Molloy Tuesday and have a showdown against Bishop Ford live on MSGVarsity.com Friday.
“Here we go,” Mackey said. “It’s February. It’s time.”

Calhoun nets 1,000th point in win over Molloy 1/12/13 - 11:43 AM
Sierra Calhoun scored her 1000th Point in a victory over Molloy
Joining names like Claire Droesch, Tina Charles, Chamique Holdsclaw and Bria Smith is no ordinary feat. But as the rest of New York City has learned, Sierra Calhoun is no ordinary player.
The Christ the King junior guard crossed the storied 1,000-point threshold with 22 seconds to go in a 64-54 victory over Brooklyn/Queens Diocese rival Archbishop Molloy Thursday evening in Middle Village.
“It’s pretty rarified air and it’s great because her brother [Omar] did it as a junior,” said Christ the King head coach Bob Mackey. “Now she’s doing it as a junior and that’s just a wonderful thing.”
Calhoun is one of the most coveted recruits in the country, fielding interest from Duke, UConn and Notre Dame.
“She’s a great kid, she just works so hard,” Mackey said. “She puts everything on the floor. She just does not stop playing”
The other important aspect of this game was that the Royals, ranked No. 4 in New York City by MSG Varsity, scored a statement win against the city’s top team. The game definitely lived up to the hype as Calhoun matched uber-talented Stanners guard Armani Tatum, with both scoring eight points by the half. Tatum finished with a game-high 25 points.
Christ the King (4-5) wasn’t able to create any separation until Mackey switched to a zone defense early in the fourth quarter. With the game tied at 41 entering the fourth quarter, the Royals went on a 15-3 run to start the period that really set the tone for the final few minutes of the game.
“When we went to the zone, that gave us a little bit of energy,” Mackey said. “They [Archbishop Molloy] started settling for jump shots.”
Tatum attempted to narrow the gap for the top-ranked Stanners (9-3), infusing momentary life into her team with consecutive 3-pointers. But Calhoun (18 points) answered, finding her way to the basket on the game’s final three possessions, including the trip to the line where she sank her 1,000th point. Mackey called a timeout and the team took a moment to recognize Calhoun’s achievement.
“I knew how many I needed, I just wasn’t counting during the game,” Calhoun said. “I didn’t really know that that was going to be the basket to get me there.”
Perhaps a sign of exactly why she is so successful, Calhoun was reluctant to heap too much praise on the achievement, instead pointing to the significance of the win against a league rival.
“I think about the game and I’m just happy we got this win. It was a great milestone for me individually, but I’m trying to keep it going as the year goes,” Calhoun said. “We were playing a rival and the highest thing to do is to get the win, so that’s what was number one on my mind.”
Mackey praised his junior guard for her achievement after the game, particularly because Calhoun was able to reach the milestone despite the fact that she often sits when the Royals are enjoying a lopsided victory.

Christ the King defeats Nazareth down the stretch 53-48 12/16/12 - 12:07 PM
by Denver Louis on Sun, Dec 16, 2012 at 12:03 AM MSG Varity
Deja Johnson knew she wasn’t ready two years ago. The junior guard joined a Christ the King team brimming with talent and recognized the importance of developing her game early on.
Despite an opportunity to join the varsity squad in her second year, the 5-foot-6 Johnson decided that she needed a better understanding of the game.
“I stayed down in my sophomore year because I didn’t think I was ready for varsity. I didn’t think I was mature enough and I felt that I still had something to prove to coach [Bob] Mackey and everybody else,” Johnson said. “Playing that second year of JV was actually a good idea. The speed of the game is much different on varsity so I knew I had to be stronger.”
In her first game back since suffering a concussion in a scrimmage against St. Anthony’s, Johnson proved the wait was worth it. The varsity newcomer was pivotal down the stretch, scoring the last five points for the Royals as she helped guide them to a 53-48 victory over CHSAA rival Nazareth Saturday afternoon in Queens.
“She got hurt pretty bad and she had to sit out 10 days,” Mackey said. “We struggled a little, but we don’t take chances with kids when it comes to their health.”
With a packed crowd along with UConn's Geno Auriemma among a bevy of college coaches on hand, both teams came to play from the tip.
The first quarter saw Nazareth (1-1), ranked No. 3 in New York City by MSG Varsity, fall behind early with a four-point deficit, but they would take the lead off a Jennifer Fay layup making the score 15-14 to end the first.
Led by junior star Sierra Calhoun, the Royals again jumped out to four-point lead. Nazareth junior guard Bianca Cuevas picked up the slack, pouring in eight of her 19 points in the second frame, including a buzzer-beating layup to again put the Lady Kingsmen up at the half.
Cuevas, who has received numerous Division I scholarship offers, slowed down considerably in the second half. Much of that can be attributed to Johnson’s stellar defense as she limited the junior to just five points after the break.
“She’s gritty and she defends,” Mackey said. “That’s just what we need from our point guards. For a player in her first year on varsity, she’s playing really well. I think she’ll keep it up.”
Calhoun was magnificent throughout the game and she did much of the heavy lifting for the Royals on the offensive side of the ball. The junior standout was unequivocally the best player on the court as she finished with 26 points, 13 rebounds and four steals for Christ the King, ranked No. 1 in New York City by MSG Varsity.
“I thought she played terrific,” Mackey said. “She did so many intangibles out there. When she’s getting the ball and finishing, there’s not a lot anyone can do. I thought she was just outstanding with the ball. Defensively, I thought she was terrific. She played an all-around great game.”
But down the line, despite getting to the line three consecutive times, Calhoun couldn’t convert on her free throws. That’s when Johnson stepped up in the clutch to hit some big baskets and perhaps cement her spot in the starting lineup.
“I missed three in a row and I just had to shake it off,” Calhoun added. “The only thing on my mind was keeping that lead.”
Johnson (eight points) scored on a layup with under a minute to go in the game and followed up with consecutive trips to line to seal the victory.
Playing with a rotating cast of point guards, Christ the King (2-2) has seemingly found a floor general. Johnson made a strong bid to be the crunch time ball-handler as she was a threat on both sides of the ball.
“When I came to tryouts, it was hard fighting for a spot,” Johnson said . “I came ready to play my game. I’m not saying I expect to start, but I would like to start.”
After an 0-6 start last season, Christ the King is looking at this victory as a sign of a better season to come.
“This is the way I expect us to play every game,” Mackey said. “I thought we controlled the turnovers tonight against a very tough defense. If we continue to play like this, the ceiling will be very high.”

Preseason girls hoops: No. 1 Christ the King 12/11/12 - 08:03 AM

They have a packed trophy case with 26 Brooklyn/Queens Division I titles and boast one of the top players in the nation in junior Sierra Calhoun.
What Christ the King doesn’t have, at least for the time being, is a point guard.
Junior Alyssa Gatti, who is recovering from a torn ACL, is still about two weeks away from being cleared to run and junior Deja Johnson, who suffered a concussion in a scrimmage against St. Anthony’s (LI), might be cleared by Friday.
Amanni Fernandez, who was going to challenge Gatti for time at the point, transferred to The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey.
Being down three potential point guards was something coach Bob Mackey, who enters his 14th year, wasn’t expecting.
“Right now it’s point guard by committee, but we’re going to be alright,” he said. “It’s a long season and we’ll figure it out.”
Of course, helping ease the early-season burden is having a player like Calhoun, who was a first team All-City selection by MSG Varsity last year after averaging 22 points seven rebounds and 3.5 steals per game as a sophomore, to lean on.
The 6-foot junior guard has offers from Division I national powerhouses Notre Dame, Duke, Kentucky, St. John’s, Rutgers, Florida State, Syracuse and West Virginia.
“Sierra is going to get 20-30 points every game and she can score 40 points probably in a couple games,” Mackey said.
The scoring load, though, needs to be shared. Also expected to contribute are versatile forwards Kollyns Scarbrough, a 5-foot-10 junior, and Taylor Butigian, a 6-foot-1 senior and Shannon Barrett, a 5-foot-11 junior.
“I think we’re real good in transition, I think we have several girls who can shoot, I think we can finish,” Mackey said. “We’ve got a bunch of different looks.”
What Christ the King, which returns nine players from last year, including four starters, also has again is a killer schedule. There are no cupcakes, not early, not late. The Royals opened the regular season Monday with a 67-53 loss at Bishop Ford.
In that game, led by Calhoun’s team-high 20 points, the Royals rallied from an early 17-3 deficit and a 20-point first-half hole to pull within three in the fourth quarter.
While Calhoun, who scored nine straight points to open the fourth quarter, found a way to put the ball in the basket, the Royals weren’t able to find a consistent secondary scorer.
“We’ve got to get some scoring from some other people,” Mackey said. “People have to be able to finish.”
Christ the King takes on Colorado powerhouse Regis Jesuit Saturday in Middle Village Saturday and then head to Archbishop Carroll (PA) Sunday.
A year ago, the Royals opened the season with six straight losses, but finished 15-14, winning a 26th Brooklyn/Queens Division I title before falling to Nazareth in the CHSAA Class AA state semifinals.
“Last year I thought we were real immature and I told the kids I think this year we’re a little better,” Mackey said. “But I think it’s going to be baptism by fire and the kids are going to have get through it.”
