After OT Loss to Rival Molloy, CK Rebounds With Back-To-Back Victories
2/2/13 - 02:39 PM

PG Chris Agun is averaging 8 ppg for CK. His play has improved as the season has gone on, and is looking to lead CK to success in the upcoming playoffs.

After a tough loss to Queens rival Archbishop Molloy in overtime on Wednesday, CK rebounded to beat Holy Cross on Friday and Fordham Prep on Saturday to hold on to second place in the Brooklyn-Queens division.

Friday, at Holy Cross, CK played sloppy early, turning the ball over and not converting shots in the paint. Holy Cross took advantage, scoring points in transition, and making the Royals pay for their costly turnovers with outside shooting. Trailing 16-10, and then again 21-14, it appeared as though the Royals were in for a long day as they just couldn't find any offensive rhythm.

However, CK was able to close out the second quarter with a critical basket that cut the Holy Cross lead to 3, and just missed an opportunity to tie the game before the half-time buzzer. CK trailed 21-18 at the half.

The third quarter opened with the same sloppy play by CK that got them in a hole early, but key contributions off the bench from Ronald Jefferson and Stephen Eddy allowed the Royals to keep pace with Holy Cross. Eddy stepped on the court an instantly became a defensive stopper for the Royals. He helped contain two of Holy Cross' best offensive players. Both he, and guard Tracy Cleckley limited Holy Cross best scorers to 12 and 10 points, respectively. Jefferson's ball-handling abilities and a clutch 3-pointer kept the Royals in the game, allowing them to maintain the same 3 point deficit they had going into the half.

The fourth quarter saw the emergence of Cleckley, who would score 9 of his game high 18 points in the frame, including four of six from the free throw line. As Cleckley was able to get to the basket at will, he was also able to find guard Tim Merriweather for open three's. Merriweather hit two three's in the quarter, giving the Royals the lead on two seperate occasions. His outside shooting in the Royals last 4 games has been nothing short of exceptional.

The biggest play of the game, though, came as David Cole was sent to the foul line with three seconds left, and the Royals clinging to a 2 point lead. Cole was able to make 1 out of 2, giving the Royals a three point lead, and forcing Holy Cross to make a three in order to tie the game in regulation. Holy Cross missed their final shot, and CK beat Holy Cross for the second time this season, both in dramatic fashion.

Cleckley led CK in scoring with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while David Cole finished with 10 and 14 rebounds.Tim Merriweather had 9 points to round out CK's leading scorers.

There was no time for rest as CK took on Fordham Prep on Saturday at CK. Again, after a slow start, and being down by a score of 16-8, CK closed out the first half on a 15-0 run to take a 23-16 halftime lead. In the second half, CK increased their lead throughout, and never lost control of the game.

CK beat Fordham Prep by a score of 49-32, limiting Prep to a total of 16 points in the second half. Cleckley was the Royals lone double-digit scorer in the game with 16 points matching his seasons points-per-game average.

Kobe Hails had his best offensive performance of the season, scoring 8 points for the Royals, and providing solid defensive contributions.

Chris Agun also scored 8 points, all in the second quarter, to help the Royals take the lead, and ultimately put the Royals ahead for good.

CK has a busy week ahead. They will close their season with three consecutive league games, all triple-headers.

On Tuesday, CK will play Archbishop Stepinac at CK. They will then travel to Archbishop Molloy on Friday, where they will seek to avenge their recent overtime loss to the Stanners. The Royals will close the regular season with a Sunday afternoon match-up with Brooklyn rival Bishop Loughlin at Christ the King.

Freshmen Avenge Earlier Loss to Xaverian, Win Convincingly 48-31
1/27/13 - 10:03 PM

Tracy Cleckley is leading CK in scoring at 15 ppg

On Sunday, the Royals avenged an early season loss to Brooklyn rival Xaverian with a very impressive 48-31 victory. The win improves the Royals to 10-6 overall, and 7-3 in the league, good enough for second place in Brooklyn-Queens. CK has now won seven of their last eight games and is peaking at just the right time of the season.

The Royals jumped out of the gate with a quick 10-0 lead. Tracy Cleckley and Chris Agun were able to get the tempo of the game moving up and down, a pace that favored the Royals. Ball movement was crisp, as CK had only 1 turnover in the quarter. David Perez highlighted the opening frame with 10 points on a perfect 3 of 3 shooting; including 2 three-pointers, and 2 of 2 from the foul line.

The Royals led after one quarter 19-4.

The second quarter was more of the same, as CK held Xaverian to just 5 points for the quarter. David Cole established himself as an inside presence early, and Xaverian had no answers. With CK up 25-9 at the half, the game seemed well in hand.

Although Xaverian made an early run at the Royals in the third quarter, CK again dug in on defense, made some outside shots, and also electrified the crowd with a put-back dunk by guard Tracy Cleckley. The play motivated the Royals to again raise their level of play and limit Xaverian's offense to just 10 point for the quarter.

When it was all said and done, CK finished off Xaverian by a score of 48-31.

The Royals were led by Tracy Cleckley's 14 points. Chris Agun and David Perez rounded out the scoring with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Tim Merriweather continued his exceptional shooting, making his 4th three-pointer in the last two games. He has become a consistent outside shooting threat for the Royals.

Currently, Cleckley is leading CK in scoring with just over 15 ppg. David Cole is CK's leading rebounder at 10 per game, including a career-high 19 rebounds in Friday's win over Bishop Loughlin.

Up next for the Royals will be a game vs division leader and Queens rival Molloy on Wednesday, followed by tripleheaders vs Holy Cross on Friday in Bayside and Fordham Prep on Saturday at CK.

Freshmen Beat Mount, Have Four Game Winning Streak
1/16/13 - 08:40 PM

On Wednesday, the Royals traveled to the Bronx to play Mount St. Michael. It was the first and only time the Royals would play the Bronx-Manhattan team during the regular season. Coming off a thrilling 54-49 OT victory over Queens rival Holy Cross, the Royals were looking to pick-up another league win and continue their stellar play.

CK did not get off to a good start, trailing 10-4 early in the quarter, and playing very sloppy. After a Mount time-out, the Royals were able to gain their composure, and go on an impressive 17 - 2 run to close out the half up 21-12.

Tracy Cleckley scored six points in the first quarter for the Royals, followed by 3 in the second. His full court defense forced Mount into poor decisions, that the Royals were able to turn into transition baskets. David Perez was able to lend a hand, scoring 4 points in the half, setting up his teammates and playing solid half-court defense.

The Royals strong second quarter play continued into the third quarter, where starting point guard Chris Agun was able to penetrate the Mount defense at will. Chris was able to get steals (6) that led to more Royals fast break opportunities. CK scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, and held Mount to just 8. After three, the Royals were up 36-18.

The fourth quarter was more of the same. The Royals dominated both ends of the court on their way to a 53-28 victory.

Chris Agun led the team in scoring with 20 points to go along with 6 steals and two assists. Tracy Cleckley, continued his stellar play with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while key reserve Stephen Eddy finished with 5 points and a season high 10 rebounds.

Up next for the Royals is a big triple-header vs. St. Raymond's on Friday night at CK. The freshmen will play at 4, followed by the JV and Varsity at 5:45 and 7:30.

1/13/13 - 09:02 PM

CK Forward Bernardo Kirkland hit a big 3-pointer in the 4th quarter of the Royals victory over St. Peter's

On Saturday, the CK Royals took on the Eagles of St. Peter's in CK's final non-league game of the season. The Royals were coming off a league win against St. Francis, and were looking to even their record at 5-5.

CK got off to a good start, leading the Eagles 8-0 after 5 minutes, but St. Peters would go on a 12-2 run to close out the quarter and take a two point lead after one.

The second quarter saw the Royals outscore St. Peter's by a score of 22-6. Center David Cole established himself as a post prescence, grabbing 4 rebounds and scoring 6 points in the quarter. Cole's inside prescence on defense allowed the Royals to rebound and score in transition. Tracy Cleckley and Chris Agun would lead the Royals on the break and score at will. The Royals full court defense also limited St. Peter's to just 6 points in the quarter. The Royals led at the half 32-18.

The third quarter was more of the same. CK used stellar defense, and strong contrinutions from Stephen Eddy and reserve Bernardo Kirkland to again limit St. Peter's to only 6 points.

When it was all said and done, CK won in convincing fashion 51-31. It was the Royals second consecutive victory at home.

Tracy Cleckley finished with a team high 18 points, to go along with 6 rebounds and 6 steals. David Cole had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Chris Agun had a season high 9 points and three assists.
