On Saturday, March 1st, CK's mens freshmen and JV teams will be playing for city championships.
The freshmen found their way to the championship game after a very convincing victory over Queens rival Archbishop Molloy. The Royals, who had already beaten Molloy twice throughout the season, played the Stanners for a third time in the semi-finals this past Tuesday night. The Royals won the game by a score of 60-37, led by Jose Alvarado's 21 points and Pierce Boczar's 15.
CK, with a record of 23-1 (16-1) will take on the Ravens of St. Raymond's. St Rays defeated Bishop Loughlin in a very close OT contest in the other semi-final game. CK beat St. Ray's in their only match-up of the season by a score of 69-67, courtesy of two free-throws by Alvarado with under one second to play.
The JV team also found their way to the finals with a victory over Molloy. The Royals, who were locked in a tight game throughout, were led by Tracy Cleckley's 18 points in the 47-41 victory over the Stanners. The game marked the third time CK beat Molloy this season, and has put the JV team in the championship game for the ninth time in the last ten seasons.
The JV Royals will take on Cardinal Hayes, who won convincingly over St. Ray's in the other semi-final game. CK, 19-4 (13-4), played Hayes just once this season and won by a score of 77-46, giving Cardinal Hayes their only loss of the season.

Freshmen regular season round-up 2/18/14 - 06:43 AM
Forward Kclejuan Brown (24) is averaging a team leading 2.1 blocks per game to go along with 12 points per game for the freshmen
The CK freshmen have had a very successfull regular season. A season that has seen them go 16-1 in league play, win all five of their non-league games, and outscore their opponent by an average of 20.5 point per game.
The one loss on CK's record, a tough mid-season match-up with Iona Prep, does not speak to the success the Royals have had against just about every team they have played.
CK has averaged over 65 points per game, while giving up only 45. The Royals have gone unbeaten on the road. They received the #1 overall seed in the upcoming freshmen intersectional playoffs. When CK has played an opponent for a second time, their average margin of victory was greater in the second game.
CK also has players that have made significant strides as individuals.
Kclejuan Brown, CK's second leading scorer at just over 12 points per game, has become the best and most consistent shot-blocker on the freshmen level. His 2.1 blocks per game are the most for any CK freshmen in over 3 years. He produced four double-doubles, headlined by a 17 point, 10 rebound performance against Queens rival Archbishop Molloy at the Stanners' gym back in early January. Browns consistency on defense and improved offensive game have helped the Royals become a very difficult team to guard.
Point guard Jose Alvarado has become CK's leader on and off the court. His 19 point per game average doesn't indicate his overall value to the team. Alvarado's has become a more vocal leader for the team, and his ability to control the game from the point guard position has allowed the other players around him to be more productive during their time on the court. Alvarado's teammates feed off of his defensive intensity, making the Royals a complete team in his prescence.
Pierce Bozcar and Cai-el Smith have both had very productive seasons for CK. Bozccar's 10.5 point per game average is good enough for third on the scoring list among freshmen. Both he and Smith have been consistent threats from beyond the three point line. The two are shooting 36% from beyond the arc, and have combined to make a total of 57 three point shots on the season. Boczar's breakout game came early in the season against All Hallows, where he hit 6 three pointers on his way to a season-high 24 points. Smith, who has scored in double figures on a couple of occassions, had an impressive game when CK traveled to Staten Island to take on island power St. Peters. Cai-el's two free throws with under 18 seconds to play would help secure an important non-league win for the Royals. Smith finished the game with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 assists, show his ability to impact the game in more ways than one.
Center Anthony Lang has also shown great improvement throughout the season. Though he is averaging just 6 points per game, his 8.5 rebounds per game are tops for CK. His free throw shooting percentage and attempts are second among CK starters, and he has also produced 3 double-doubles, good enough for 2nd on the team. Lang had 18 points and 11 rebounds against New Jersey power St. Anthony's. Lang's ability to pass out of the post, and lead CK's wings to open baskets in transition have made him an invaluable member of the Royals.
CK's bench has been extremely productive. The reserves are averaging a combined 16 points per game off the bench, led by reserve Hegel Augustin's 5 points per contest. Guards LaQuan Robinson, Theo Snoddy, and Kendale Greenidge have all shown improvement throughout the season. All three have different skills that allow them to step on the court and offer CK different options while maintaining a high level of play. Aaron Patterson has become a very solid back-up center, providing CK with rebounding and defensive intensity every time he steps on the court.
Anthony Young and Erich Naumann have stepped their games up as well. Naumann has become a reliable threat from beyond the arc, leading CK in 3 point shooting percentage at 37.5. Naumann has also proven to be a good rebounder for size, constantly out-rebounding bigger opponents. Young's progression has been noticeable as well. He has added strength and quickness at both the guard and forward spot. Young's versatility will make him an important piece to the puzzle as CK begins their playoff run this coming week.
Sean Nolan, CK's most popular player, has become a vocal leader for the Royals. Nolan's improvement, though, goes beyond being a leader off the court. Nolan has improved his shooting, has become a better ball-handler, and has consitently given CK a quality option off the bench during his time on the cocurt.

Freshmen knock off Loughlin, claim #1 seed in freshmen city-wide playoffs 2/10/14 - 10:05 AM
Starting Center Anthony Lang (25) finished with 13 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 assists against rival Bishop Loughlin on Sunday at CK
Sunday was considered "rivalry day" by many, with Christ the King taking on Bishop Loughlin in five basketball games, all played on the campus of Christ the King. The girls JV would start the day off with a morning contest. CK would win that game easily by double-digits, setting the tone for the rest of the day. The freshmen contest, tipping off at noon, was anticipated to be a match-up between the two top freshmen teams.
CK had previously beaten Bishop Loughlin ten days ago in Brooklyn, causing a tie for first place. The freshmen were intent on winning again, and claiming sole possession of first place.
CK started the game off hot. Starting forward Kclejuan Brown scored 8 of his 11 points in the quarter, as point guard Jose Alvarado found Brown for easy baskets inside. The royals were able to extend Loughlin's zone defense with some good outside shooting from Alvarado and guard Pierce Boczar, who both hit 3-pointers in the opening quarter. After one quarter, CK was firmly in control with a 20-8 lead.
The second quarter was more of the same, as Alvarado was masterful in the open court. He would score 10 of his game-high 27 points in the quarter, and CK would take a 34-20 lead into the locker room at half-time.
Loughlin made a push late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to cut the lead down to nine points. The Royals seemed to be complacent, and didn't show a sense of urgency to the lead was below 10. After a time-out with about 5 minutes left to play, CK settled down and again began to take control of the game.
Loughlin's attempt to press CK was unsuccessful, as the Royals were able to break the press and take time off the clock before getting off a good shot. Cai-el Smith was a key contributer during the Royals stretch run. After struggling offensively in the first half, Smith scored 7 points in the second half, and made critical plays in the open-court that allowed CK to control tempo.
With Loughlin being forced to foul to stop the clock, CK would get a solid contribution from center Anthony Lang. The center was fould on four sepearate occassions down the strectch, and converted on all 7 free throw attempts. His 11 points in the second half were enough to secure the win for CK. The final score was 65-50.
Game Notes:
Jose Alvarado led the team in scoring with 27, and added 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
Anthony Lang finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds, and shot 7 for 7 from the foul line.
Kclejuan Brown scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
CK won all five games on Sunday vs. Bishop Loughlin. The GJV, BF, BJV, BV, and GV all won by double-digits.
CK has improved to 20-1 (15-1). They have won five consecutive games since their only loss of the season to Iona Prep.
CK is now the #1 seed out of the Brooklyn-Queens division in the upcoming freshmen playoffs. They receive a bye into the quarter-finals, which will be played at St. Raymond's high school in the Bronx on Saturday the 22nd, with time and opponent TBD.
CK will close out the regular season on Monday against Holy Cross at CK. The game time is 4:30.

Freshmen beat previously undefeated Bishop Loughlin, move into a tie for first place 2/2/14 - 06:39 AM
PG Jose Alvarado scored a game-high 27 points against Brooklyn rival Bishop Loughlin this past week
On Friday, the Royals traveled to Fort Greene to take on the previously undefeated Lions of Bishop Loughlin. The game would be a battle for first place, as CK had only one, and Loughlin had yet to lose this season.
Loughlin and CK would trade baskets early and often. The uptempo style of play seemed to benefit both teams. Jose Alvarado and Pierce Boczar would keep CK close with an array of three point shots and face break lay-ups. After one quarter, CK would have a 20-19 lead.
The second quarter saw both teams pick up their defensive intensity However, Loughlin was cleaning up on the boards, as CK consistently gave up offensive rebounds and put backs. CK had a hard time getting into an offensive rhythm, bothered by Loughlins press, and as a result, went into the locker room down 33-31.
At the start of the third quarter, Kclejuan Brown and Anthony Lang took control of the backboards, as CK would use their size advantage to aggressively rebound and control the tempo of the game. Brown, who was saddled with foul trouble early in the game, would be come the defensive anchor for CK. He would have all six of his rebounds in the third, to go along with two blocked shots. As Brown would experience continuing foul trouble as the quarter went on, Hegel Augustin would play a pivotal role for the Royals off the bench.
Theo Snoddy, a reserve guard, also stepped his game up for CK. His two three-pointers in the third quarter were critical in putting CK ahead for good. After three quarters of play, CK was ahead 47-43.
Jose Alvarado would take control of the game in the 4th quarter. His efforts, along with Boczar and Cai-el Smith, saw the Royals slow the pace of the game down. CK protected there lead by methodically wearing down Loughlins zone defense, and scoring with less than 10 seconds to go on the shot clock.
Bishop Loughlin would attempt to make one last push to try to retake the lead, but with 1:30 to go, CK would go up by ten and never relinquish the lead. The final score was 60-55.
Game Notes:
CK had just five total rebounds at half-time, and finished the game with a total of 31.
CK improved its record to 18-1 (12-1). There 12-1 record in league play is good enough for a tie with Bishop Loughlin, who CK now holds the head-to-head tie breaker over.
Alvarado led the team in scoring with 27 points. He also had a season-high 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and just 1 turnover.
Boczar scored 14 points, including four three-pointers.
Anthony Lang again led CK in rebounding with 8.
The freshmen have a busy week ahead of them. The will finish out the season with three consecutive home games. They will play Holy Cross on Wednesday at 4:15pm, Archbishop Molloy on Friday at 4:00pm, and Bishop Loughlin on Sunday at 12:00pm.

CK frosh travel to Staten Island; escape with victory over St. Peters 1/22/14 - 06:40 AM
Reserve guard LaQuan Robinson (10) would help lead CK to victory over St. Peters. Robinson scored 5 points in the win
On Sunday, the Royals traveled to Staten Island to take on St. Peters High School. The Eagles of St. Peters, usually one of the top teams on SI, made a strong push to hand CK its first loss of the season.
The game was played even early on, with both teams trading baskets on successive possessions in the first quarter. The Royals, behind the play of starting point guard Jose Alvarado, would hold a 13-9 advantage after one. Alvarado had 8 points in the quarter, scoring off steals and impressive moves going to the basket. Forward Kclejuan Brown was also involved early, scoring inside for the Royals as a result of Alvarado's passing.
The second quarter saw CK control the tempo of the game. Their full-court press was too much for St. Peters to handle, and the Royals guards converted Eagles turnovers into transition baskets. Adam Leslie, Cai-el Smith, and Hegel Augustin were able to provide an offensive lift for CK, combining for 10 points in the quarter. With CK's continuing defensive pressure, they were able to go into the locker room with a 32-13 halftime lead.
The start of the third quarter saw CK get into quick foul trouble. Alvarado had picked up his 4th foul at the 5 minute mark. Leslie and center Anthony Lang were also in foul trouble, causing the Royals to rely on their bench. St. Peters stormed back into the game as a result of excellent 3-point shooting and CK's inability to control the pace of the game. Turnovers and foul trouble plagued the Royals throughout the second half, allowing St Peters to slowly chip away at the lead.
A once commanding 19 point lead had been cut all the way down to 4 with just over one minute to go in the fourth quarter.
Reserve LaQuan Robinson made some huge plays for CK in the fourth quarter. A corner 3, and an and-1 basket helped the Royals maintain the lead that St. Peters had worked so hard to trim down. Augustin would also play a big role for CK in the 4th. Brown, Augustin, and Robinson were instrumental in beating the Eagles full-court pressure, allowing the Royals the chance to continue to take time off the clock, and score from the free throw line.
As the fourth quarter came to a close, Cai-el Smith would make two free throws to extend the Royals lead to 62-58 with only 18 seconds to go on the clock. The Eagles would again score going to the basket with 9 seconds left to play, and they would immediately foul Augustin, with just 7 seconds to go. Augustin would walk to the line and calmly sink both free throws, giving CK the 64-60 advantage they would need to secure the victory.
Game Notes:
CK would beat the Eagles and improve to 15-0 (10-0).
The Royals would get 20 points from their bench, lead by Augustin's 9 and Robinson 5.
Anthony Lang led CK in rebounding with 10. Jose Alvarado recorded a season-high 9 steals.
CK's next game will be against Iona Prep on Saturday afternoon. Game time is 12:00pm at Christ the King.

Freshmen come back to beat Prep; maintain perfect record 1/17/14 - 06:41 AM
PG Theo Snoddy (13) would help lead the Royals to a league win over rival SFP
The Freshmen Royals played host to Queens rival St. Francis Prep on Tuesday, and had to fight there way to a win.
The Terriers opened up the game on a tear, hitting their first four three pointers, while the Royals appeared to be sluggish and couldn't get anything going on offense. Preps hot shooting quickly put CK at a 14-3 deficit 6 minutes into the game. It appeared as though the Royals were in for a long day.
Pierce Boczar, CK's leading 3 point shooter, would spark the Royals, with a three point shot to get CK back on track. CK's defense began to pick-up, allowing Boczar one last shot attempt to close the quarter; a 48 foot three-pointer that went through the net as the buzzer sounded to end the quarter. Prep's lead was now just 2 points, and the Royals would use the buzzer beater as a springboard into a second quarter surge.
The Royals would hold Prep to just 4 points in the second quarter, and the bench began to have an impact on the game. Adam Leslie, Theo Snoddy, and Hegel Augustin would keep the Royals on the attack as they filled in for struggling starters Jose Alvarado and Kclejuan Brown. As a result, the Royals once 11 point deficit would be turned into a 10 point half-time lead, 28-18.
CK would control the tempo the rest of the game, and cruise to victory by a score of 56-34. CK would hold St Francis Prep to a combined 20 points between the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters.
Games Notes:
Anthony Lang led CK in scoring with 10 points, to go along with 9 rebounds.
Cai-el Smith had 9 points, Brown and Boczar each had 8, and the CK bench would combine to score 22 points in the game, a season-high.
CK improved to 14-0 (9-0). The next game for the freshmen will be against St. Peter's (SI) on Sunday, January 19th, at 1:00pm in Staten Island.

CK Beats St. Raymonds, Stays Undefeated 1/4/14 - 06:41 AM
Starting Center Anthony Lang (#25) posted a game-high 11 rebounds, and had nine points in a solid all around effort for CK in their league win over Bronx rival St. Raymonds
The freshmen team went to St. Ray's on Saturday and stole a victory, by a score of 69-67. The game was close from the start, with CK down early on. The Royals got off to a slow-start, and the Ravens of St. Rays were red hot from the field.
Starting center Anthony Lang kept the Royals close early, scoring five of his nine points in the quarter. Lang was also a force on the backboard, grabbing 6 of his game-high 11rebounds in the quarter. However, it wasn't enough, and CK was down at the end of one quarter 17-14.
The second quarter was more of the same, as CK struggled to score, and St. Raymonds turned the game into a track meet, consistently beating CK in transition for easy baskets. Good shooting from reserve Hegel Augustin kept CK alive, as he would hit for 5 of his season high 10 points in the frame. Theo Snoddy also contributed 5 points in the quarter, helping the Royals stay close without the services of foul-plagued Cai-el Smith and Kclejuan Brown. At the half, CK trailed by a score of 33-29. This was the first game all year that CK had trailed at the end of any quarter.
Out of halftime, the Royals opened up hot. Cai-el Smith hit back-to-back 3's, starting PG Jose Alvarado scored going to the basket, and Kclejuan Brown became a consistent offensive threat. Starting guard Pierce Boczar also got into the scoring column, with a deep three of his own, followed by a pull-up jump shot. The Royals turned a five point deficit into an 11 point lead between the start of the third quarter and the 5-minute mark of the fourth.
CK would soon squander the lead, as St. Rays came charging back. Turnovers by CK allowed the Ravens to score quickly without taking too much time off the clock. Anthony Lang contributed what might have been the most important basket of the game; a right-handed hook in the post to put CK up by a score of 67-62 with just under a minute to go. But CK would blow that lead as well, and would find themselves in a tie game with just 4 seconds left.
The Royals inbounded the ball to Alvarado, who immediately drove the ball down the court, only to be fouled at the half-court line with just 0.7 seconds remaining. With the Ravens in the bonus, Alvarado would go to the line for a one-and-one opportunity. He calmly sank both free throws, giving CK the 2-point advantage, 69-67. St. Rays would inbound the ball, but were not able to get a shot off in time. The previously undefeated Ravens would suffer their first loss of the season, and CK would improve to 9-0 (6-0).
Game Notes:
Alvarado led CK in scoring with 18 points, followed by Kclejuan Brown with 12, Augustin with 10, Lang with 9, and Smith with 8.
Anthony Lang posted a game-high 11 rebounds.
Jose Alvarado had a team-high 7 assists.
Up next for CK is a non-league game with St. Anthony's of Jersey City on Sunday at CK. Game time is 2pm.

Naumann, along with Kendale Greenidge, provided a huge lift for the Royals off the bench. Greenidge's dribble-penetration opened up the court for himself and his teammates, leading to his season high of 5 points. In total, the Royals recieved 34 points from their bench, reaching a new season high.
The freshmen are averaging 69 points per game, while holding their opponents to just 39 ppg, and impressive 30 point per game average margin of victory.

Frosh beat Holy Trinity; Enter Holiday Break 7-0 12/24/13 - 08:02 AM
Forward Kclejuan Brown (24) has emerged as the Royals third leading scorer at just over 11 points per game
The Freshmen Royals scored an impressive non-league victory over Holy Trinity of Long Island yesterday. The Royals beat Holy Trinity by a score of 56-37, the fifth game in which the Royals held there opponent to 40 points or less. The win improved CK's overall record to 7-0 (4-0 in league play).
CK was led by Jose Alvarado's 17 points, 9 assists and 4 steals. Cai-el Smith and Kclejuan Brown both scored 9 points in the game, while Anthony Lang led the Royals in rebounding with 11 boards.

He is second on the team in 3 pointers made, and first in 3 point shooting percentage (50%).
Pierce Bozcar goes into the break as the Royals second leading scorer at 13.71 points per game, right behind starting point guard Jose Alvarado, who is averaging 17.5 points per game to go along with 7.5 assists per game. Boczar has made 14 three pointers this year, leading the Royals in that category.

Theo Snoddy, Hegel Augustin, and Aaron Patterson have averaged a combined 14 points per game for the Royals off the bench. LaQuan Robinson has provided great minutes off the bench as a back-up point guard.
Key forwards Kendale Greenidge, Adam Leslie, and Erich Naumann have also been key contributers for the Royals this season. Naumann has proven to be able to play against bigger opponents, while still being able to step outside and shoot from deep. Greenidge can get to the basket and score against just about anyone who is guarding him, while Leslie continues to score in transition off steals and hit the open shot.
Sean Nolan has also provided a spark off the bench. Nolan's outside shooting has been impressive, and his ability to move the ball around the perimeter has kept defenses guessing at all times.
CK's next game will be against Mount St. Michael at Christ the King. That game will take place on December 30th at 12:00pm.

CK Beats Stepinac; Improves to 3-0 12/14/13 - 11:37 AM
Guard Pierce Boczar is currently averaging 14 points per game for the Royals; good for second on the team
On Friday night, the Royals took on the Crusaders of Archbishop Stepinac in a league cross-over game in White Plains. The Freshmen Royals were looking to win their third game of the year, and did so in convincing fashion.
Play was sloppy early, with turnovers by CK's guards, and missed lay-ups preventing them from getting too far out in front of Stepinac. Kclejuan Brown and Jose Alvarado, both starters, were relegated to the bench early in the first quarter due to foul trouble. The bench, with the likes of key reserves Hegel Augustin and LaQuan Robinson, were able to step in and play with a high degree of success.
Robinson was able to run the point smoothly, finding guard Pierce Boczar for shots in transition, and getting the ball to forwards Cai-el Smith and Anthony Lang for shots in the paint. Boczar, currently the Royals second leading scorer, was the story for the first-half. He scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the half, including hitting two three-pointers, and stretching the Stepinac defense to the perimeter, opening up the floor for his teammates. Boczar kept his team in the lead, allowing CK to go into the locker room at halftime up by a score of 37-16.
The third quarter was a balanced attack by the Royals. Jose Alvarado scored 7 points in the quarter, as his foul trouble was now behind him. Augustin came off the bench to hit two three-pointers, and Klcejuan Brown stepped up his play with 4 points. As a result, CK increased its lead to 58-29, and never looked back.
The final score was 70-38. Pierce Boczar led the team with 18 points and 3 rebounds.
Jose Alvarado scored 11, Cai-el Smith had 9, and Hegel Augustin rounds out the Royals leading scorers for the game with 8.
